The death of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Turkish Republic, was commemorated throughout Turkey, in northern Cyprus and at Turkish diplomatic missions worldwide on Tuesday, the 72nd anniversary of his death.
Traffic stopped and sirens blared for two minutes, starting at 9:05 a.m., the moment Atatürk died at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul 72 years ago, and flags around the country were lowered to half-mast, where they remained until sundown.
The first ceremony was held at Anıtkabir in Ankara on Wednesday. State officials under the direction of President Abdullah Gül laid wreaths at Atatürk’s mausoleum at 9:05 a.m., the exact moment of his death in 1938.
