AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine study is put on hold

AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine study put on hold due to suspected adverse reaction in participant in the U.K.

Alarge, Phase 3 study testing a Covid-19 vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford at dozens of sites across the U.S. has been put on hold due to a suspected serious adverse reaction in a participant in the United Kingdom.

A spokesperson for AstraZeneca, a frontrunner in the race for a Covid-19 vaccine, said in a statement that the company’s “standard review process triggered a pause to vaccination to allow review of safety data.”

It was not immediately clear who placed the hold on the trial, though it is possible it was placed voluntarily by AstraZeneca and not ordered by any regulatory agency. The nature of the adverse reaction and when it happened were also not immediately known, though the participant is expected to recover, according to an individual familiar with the matter.

Oxford vaccine trial on hold because of safety issue

Clinical trials for Oxford's COVID-19 vaccine have been put on hold, drug maker AstraZeneca said Tuesday.

"Our standard review process was triggered and we voluntarily paused vaccination to allow review of safety data by an independent committee," the company said in a statement. "This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials."

The statement continued: "In large trials illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check this carefully. We are working to expedite the review of the single event to minimize any potential impact on the trial timeline. We are committed to the safety of our participants and the highest standards of conduct in our trials."

Everyone's body is going to react differently to these otherwise alien antigens that make up these vaccines. These type of negative reactions will be seen with the other vaccines currently in development.

Trump is obviously not very happy about this tonight.

Trump might not be thrilled but lefties around the globe are ecstatic that there will not be a vaccine for COVID-19.

There was a point in this country where everyone could have been on the same page about the urgent need for a vaccine for a bug like this but now it's more important that a given politician does or doesn't get a popularity bump.

The people that have been totally ****ting themselves over "Trump didn't do anything!!!" are now apoplectic that he's actually doing something. The left wing ideologues in this country simply can't be taken seriously or, rather, must be taken as a serious threat to anything even tangentially related to America's founding principles.

No caring person would be happy about it.
? Are you happy about it ?

It’s amazing how quickly an administration can squander trust and credibility.

What? It's just a glitch. It happens. The guy is probably allergic to eggs.

This will be back on soon.

The FDA safety protocols say that if you can't do it safely, you can't do it.

Imagine the already overwhelmed hospitals suddenly being stormed by people experience a bad reaction to a vaccination?

They always have to analyze things. It's better to be safe than sorry.

:inandout: (There is no way this ends well, we have a pandemic and it is expected that there will be issues along the way trying to get to some sort of solution.)

Not responsive to the question you were asked.

I’m happy about it.

It shows the sponsor (AZ) is responsible and is treating this clinical trial with the same caution other clinical trials get.

That’s GREAT news.

For those unfamiliar with trials, it’s not unusual for a phase 2 or phase 3 trial y to pause temporarily after a serious reported adverse reaction.

It’s how trials are done.

Remember- chances are, with multiple vaccines in trials, a few will crap out. Efficacy is always tough, and safety will probably take at least one out- more if the have these trials go to completion.

You seem to be under the delusion that ‘thinking good thoughts’ will solve this issue. Like those idiots who go to trump rallies unmasked, as if somehow biology doesn’t apply to trump rallies.

Exactly. There are 30+ vaccine candidates being developed; one not working out is par for the course. "Fail fast" style of development. Pfizer candidate is doing well currently.

What is this thing that Trump is actually doing-apart from insisting a vaccine will be ready for his "special day"? Nobody is "ecstatic" about a damn thing; that's the sort of response I expect in a 12 year-old. What we are happy about is that those who are trialling vaccines are united in stating categorically that they will not be rushed for the sake of Trump's political expediency, so Trump can whine and fume as much as he wants. It won't get him anywhere.

Are you insane?
Why would anyone of any party want the virus to continue?
We all want it to stop as fast as possible so we can all get back to some kind of normal.
Hell, I've been waiting almost 6 months now to just meet with a friend for a few games of pool because all the pubs were closed and have only just re-opened why as a so called leftist would I want the virus to continue?

Also how exactly was Trump helping a vacine project funded by UK government along with a university and Glaxo?

You may be surprised by this shocking announcement but the US doesn't fund everything and Trump isn't involved everywhere.

like i said other threads, established pharmaceutical companies do not like to **** around. this investigative action should generate more confidence in the vaccine that they eventually release, not less.

The halt has all the earmarks of an expert system, a safety check based on past history.
They will evaluate the case of what caused the bad reaction, before proceeding.

Bet you are real happy... So what we know is that all safety precautions are being followed. Glad they put a hold until all questions about the adverse reaction are answered.

Anyone wishing for a safe and effective vaccine will be happy that a company developing the product is being cautious and responsible. Except Trump of course who would like nothing more than a vaccine rushed into production and released before his "special day", and for no reason other than political expediency. That's how much he 'cares' about you.

The BBC are saying the hold is routine while they investigate why a single individual became ill.
They didn't say the trial had collapsed or been stopped.
I'm pretty sure Glaxo are just being cautious as they'd likely not want the boatload of lawsuits that would erupt if they decided to give out an improperly tested vaccine.

Can you imagine that happening in the litigation epicentre of the world; the US? Lawyers would have a field day, and get even richer.

Yep, it'd be pretty much commercial suicide.

i agree. i'm fairly sure that safety testing will be exhaustive, as that's the way it works at large, established companies.

Thus far, as far as we know, vaccine development companies are following their protocols. Those protocols were originally developed to ensure approval of a final product by the FDA. All's well with the process.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.
