Anger and ugliness are a cycle that doesn't stop until somebody actually does some of that stuff Jesus was talking about. I also think if Buddha and Jesus were here today they'd tell us that we don't forgive and hold ourselves to a higher standard for the benefit of others; we do it for ourselves. All the ugliness and viciousness people lash out with actually cuts both ways.
