At a Brooklyn beer garden, patrons squeezed together on picnic tables to sip on lagers. In Manhattan’s Upper East Side, they huddled outside a diner after dark. And in the East Village, a flock of New Yorkers spent the city’s first Friday since its reopening crowded shoulder-to-shoulder on the sidewalk.

As a jazz band played outside the bars on St. Marks Place, there were more frosty beverages than covered faces to be seen.

“Don’t make me come down there …” New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) wrote on Twitter on Saturday, responding to a video of the maskless masses.

I've watched Cuomo in action & he's serious. He will have bar patrons arrested & take away license to sell alcohol. And shut the city back down.

But when it comes to protesters in crowds and without masks, he tells the police to leave them alone.

That's why nobody in NY takes him seriously.

Thats a good way to get his ass kicked. New Yorkers aren't exactly shrinking violets.

They will be if they're stuffed inside police vans. And taking away a bar's license is heavy stuff after this lockdown.

These patrons either don't understand the situation or simply chose to disregard it.

Yep, who needs state/local tax revenue when you can just get emergency funding from congress. ;)

Doubtful. Andrew Cuomo is trying to tamp down his legacy of being the man who ordered elderly people infected with COVID-19 out of hospitals and back into their nursing homes where they ended up killing their co-residents. I do not think he wants to be the man who is known for encouraging capricious mass incarceration, especially when most of the people who will be arrested will almost certainly be people of color.

What? It most certainly will. I know a few bar/restaurant owners. They're deathly afraid of the state liquor board. Always have been.

This is not pre covid and they have already been shut down and many are at the brink. You dont think they will fight back? Think again.

I live in NY... Pre-During or Post COVID, doesn't matter. They don't want to piss off the liquor board.

Many are hurting, so the last thing they want to do is lose their licenses with the state maybe opening in 2-3 weeks. Lose their license then get the OK to open in 2 weeks? Not a smart move, and they know it...
