Recruiters are now telling students that the Iraq War is over, in order to get them to enlist.

Article is here.

Ah, but those that are falling for it and are inducted into the armed forces are highly intelligent and well educated people. My a$$.

Actually, they are. Some of them are just misled. I would like to thank those who joined, willing or otherwise, for doing a damned dirty and thankless job, that nobody else would volunteer for. Say what you want about Bush, but please leave the troops alone. They should never be used as political pawns, whether it is by the President, or by people who would dare call them stupid. They do not deserve that. They are the reason you sleep safely in your bed at night.

That may have been true decades ago, but not any longer. Nothing they do in Iraq helps me sleep safely at night. Nothing they did in Vietnam helps me currently sleep safely at night. The freedom we have in the United States has not been in jeopardy for decades.

It is still true today. If you think that the United States would continue to be as strong and with all the freedoms you seem to take for granted without a military to protect those freedoms then you are extremely naive.

Vietnam and Iraq, you think that's the only thing we have to thank the military for?! What about keeping the peace in Europe up until the fall of the Soviet Union? That was long after Vietnam, if I'm not mistaken. How free would you be without American forces keeping the Soviet empire from taking over Europe and Asia one country at a time until the end of the Cold War?

And what about the first Gulf War? You think Saddam would've stopped in Kuwait? He would have taken over the Saudi oil fields too if the US hadn't stopped him. How free would you be if that tyrant had been allowed to control half of the world's oil? (And that was when he still had all of his WMDs, by the way.) Think how free and safe you would be if he had used oil as a weapon to blackmail our friends and allies (not to mention punish you personally every time you're at the pump).

How safe would you be without the men and women in uniform who toppled the Taliban and hunted down all those Al-Qaeda terrorists?

Imagine for a minute a world in which all those enemies had not been confronted by a strong US military, and see how your freedoms and prosperity would have been taken away from you one piece at a time.
How well would you sleep at night then?

You still owe your freedom and safety to the fact that the US has a strong military. God help us if there is ever a president who thinks like you.

But if I may go back on topic, I think it's wrong what those recruiters said, but I'm sure it does not represent most Army recruiters.

You have your opinion, and I have mine. It's that simple. You're a little overly dramatic, if you ask me.

Yes, exactly. I'm free to express my opinions and you are free to express your opinions.

I just don't think you understand how much that freedom depends on having a strong military.

You said the military doesn't keep you safe when you sleep at night.

I think that's exactly what it's been doing for the passed 60 years. Just as it did back in those earlier times.
