Every living person descends from someone rich and/or famous in their time. To illustrate this, everyone of European descent has a common ancestor in Charlemagne.

I believe you are thinking of Edgar Allen Poe. John Poe was a lawman. He was involved in the hunt for Billy the Kid. He was played by Viggo Mortensen in the American western film Young Guns II.
