Are you for or against a four-day work/school week?

Should we change to a four day work/school week?

  • We should change to a four day school week, but not a four day work week

I'd support a 2 day work week, with the other 5 days being personal enjoyment time.
Thats about what I have now with my side gig....and its freaking sweet. Actually its probably more like a 1 day work week, if even that. But then when I do work there might be several very full days, but thats only every month or so. Every 2 months.
People that go out and work all week for peanuts are SUCKERS, imo. I get it: some of them have to do it, you got kids etc. You do what you got to do. But even a mule has sense enough to avoid work whenever possible.
And slaving all week for the kind of crap wages that are typical in my area: NOT HAPPENING for me. But you have to figure out a way around it, and that might not be easy. You have to learn to utilize what you have at your disposal.
The one big concern I always had was healthcare, thats how The Man keeps everyone in this screwed up country doing what they hate every day. Now, with my Socialist BidenCare™, I dont ever plan on "working" again. I'd have to be an imbecile to do that. I still work mind you, but like I said a very small fraction of a 40 hour work week.

The Universe didnt set me down here to spend my days doing something I'd rather not be doing, I was put here to enjoy life and have a great time! I havent had a real job in over 15 years and I'm still a good decade from retirement age.
I piss and moan and grumble sometimes about this or that, but most folks would love to have my life I guess.

Its cool, I say a 1 day work week for me, but everyone else can keep slaving away! The drones have to keep the trains moving on time. Heh heh heh.

How long is day care an issue? once they hit school age they would be going to school the same hours you're working
School starts late here, and I have a commute. Those four days would be very difficult to manage every week. I'd probably look for another job to avoid it.

So what’s your secret?

My job is actually moving to a four day work week in a few months, so I'm curious as to how it will work out.

Well I got into the live music production industry. I have interest in a venue.
It took a little bit of investment capital.
I have a lifelong interest in music (ya know typical story thought I was gonna be a rock star when I was younger), and I was lucky enough to know a few people that were well off enough to invest some money.
Its only a smaller venue like shows of 5000-6000 people, but when you have a $100 ticket for a couple days of music...well you can do that math.
Theres also a lot of potential headaches of course, back in the early days we lost money often and I literally shed some blood sweat and tears over it. There were times I didnt think I was going to be able to pull it all together. Health department, cops, all sorts of problems.
But nowadays although there are still hiccups of course, we do OK. And its a LOTTA cash. We do ticket sales online but its mostly cash coming in at the front door.;)
This avenue wouldn't work out for everyone, but you gotta think outside the box. Working a normal job for a living is DEATH man, that aint no life.

4 ten-hour workdays seem to work better for most adults. Productivity generally increases in fact.

However, longer school days do not work for children. They have a much shorter attention span. Studies show a student's average attention span is less than 15 minutes and any class over 40 minutes is a total waste.

Nice. Congrats on your success. I guess you must’ve taken a bit of a beating thanks to Covid but things are coming back.

I worked for 37 years for a small number of technology companies and between pensions - 3 in all - and investments I don’t have to work but that’s after 37 years of busting my balls.

Yeah, true that. Covid sux. Lost 3 friends to it. Got shut down for awhile.

Yeah, theres always some dues to be paid for sure. Lots of dues.(y)

One shop I worked had 3 12hr days 4 days off. ,2 shifts a day. With 40 hrs pay. With enough employees that the shop ran 24-7. There was a staggered shift, somehow it worked for about 6 months.

But it isn’t a 52 week year, in some parts of the country.

OK, but whether one works four 10 hour days or five 8 hour days per week doesn’t matter - it’s still 40 hours/week of work.

I have a friend that works 4 10's making dentures. He loves it because once you are up and at work the extra 2 hours is no big deal, but he gets a three day weekend every weekend, and still gets 40 hours in.

Most people should be working less hours per week.

Most people should be working less hours per week.

I am certainly doing that now. ;)

Mainly because I am 68 and getting Social Security retirement benefits. I now get paid the FTE of almost $11/hour simply for remaining alive.

That’s a huge benefit for people who have long commutes - where I live the one way commute to a job in NYC is 90 minutes to 2 hours. Getting back 3-4 hours of your life every week is pretty significant.

And the three day weekend every week has got to be nice.

Enjoy it. :)

What do you do with all those kids on the day they aren't in school? What about those who depend on the schools for at least two of their meals each day. What stops these kids from getting into trouble when schools are shut down.

I currently work a 4 day week and it's the best move I ever made.
My long weekends give me plenty of time to recharge for the next week at work and I feel I'm way more productive.
