Definitely the right forum for this post. As with other posts of mine, I personally would edit the headline to include the word "Some", as I don't believe all white people would be ready to give up on American political and civil institutions.

Two of those 'librul' academic types who recently finished a paper on the influence of white nationalism in the elections of 2016, are interviewed by Salon magazine. Steven Miller and Nicholas Davis discuss their research linking racial intolerance to a longing for authoritarian rule.

Are white people ready to bail on democracy? These researchers say the danger is real

Donald Trump's combination of racism and authoritarianism, made repeatedly clear through his words and deeds, has not been disqualifying for his voters and most Republicans. Indeed it is central to his appeal and has lured tens of millions of Americans into his movement.

In an increasingly diverse and cosmopolitan America, this combination is like a dagger pointed at the heart of the country’s democracy. Whether our republic can survive changing racial demographics and white racial paranoia, and how much Donald Trump’s racist and authoritarian movement is really a deviation from America’s historic norms, is very much in question. It seems clear that white identity politics has helped the Republican Party maintain control over its voters and that a large number of white Americans value the privilege conferred on them by skin color more than they value democracy.

(. . .) Steven Miller, a professor of political science at Clemson University, and Nicholas Davis, a research scientist at the Public Policy Research Institute at Texas A&M University. They are the authors of the new research paper “White Outgroup Intolerance and Declining Support for American Democracy.”

Please note that this is a preliminary version of an academic paper without peer review; a process that can take a couple years.

Can you say "border wall" or "ban all Muslims"? I know some on this forum just love those thoughts.
How do you define authoritarianism? How is it operationalized in your work?

Miller: Authoritarianism can mean different things in different fields of political science. It can refer to a form of governance or a disposition or worldview privileging conformity, submission to authority and aggression toward minorities or out-groups that is activated under a perceived sense of threat.

We have a democracy? No. We no longer even have a democratic republic.

No, I don't think they are. They are just striving mightily to preserve the America of their ancestors recent to founding fathers. They are making this last stand under the auspices of Trump to stall or stop demographic change. They think they can do this by walling off the country, stopping or sharply limiting all forms of immigration, and deporting people on any pretext they can. Couple this with gerrymandering and all forms of suppressing the brown skin vote and you have Trump and Republicans under his heel working to preserve Democracy but a Democracy dominated by Eurocentric citizens.

Do you support open borders, or rubber stamp citizenship?

Do you support open borders, or rubber stamp citizenship?

Not an unexpected response from a person who appears to be incapable of comprehending the fact that there is a spectrum of options when discussing complex problems.

To accuse a person who sees a border wall as little more than a political gesture for one increasingly small segment of the American population, as being in favour of "open borders", is refusing to accept the fact that there are far more effective means of controlling cross border traffic than a solid wall.

"rubber stamp citizenship"? Define it for the clueless because I can't find any understanding or comments on the matter except on some of the more wackjob rightie websites.

this is not really news. I've known since my college poly sci class that democracy exists not for the people but in spite of the people. You simply have to peruse this site to see that a large percentage of conservatives have nothing but disgust for something that doesn't give them exactly what they are told they are owed. Fox and republicans literally follow the CIA playbook for undermining democracy: spread propaganda and lies, undermine faith in the govt, undermine the economy. America undermined democracy throughout the world for decades doing just that. Do you think their disgust for democracy magically stopped at the border? Until conservatives hold republicans accountable, I don't see democracy lasting much longer.

There is simply no hope for democracy in America until conservatives have the same standards for accountability and integrity for their own that they do for democrats.

Steven and Nicholas are full of hot air.

There is no "racial intolerance" in 2019.

Caucasians since the 1960s have bent over backwards to ensure equality for everyone.

a. Affirmative action has integrated the work force.
b. 80% of immigrants are non-European.
c. Caucasian voters helped elect the first non-Caucasian president and thousands of other elected officials.

etc.

This is currently the most ethnically integrated society in the history of the world.

If authoritarianism comes to the States it will come because some people of all ethnicities think they know how to establish Utopia on Earth. It will have nothing to do with "racial intolerance."

Conservative whites have been able to hold on to power because of the undemocratic levers of power “baked” into the system: the Electoral College, which can negate the popular vote, and the US Senate, which gives voters in small, more conservative states a disproportionate voice in national legislation.

Naturally, they believe these distortions of representation are the results of wise decisions made by the Founding Fathers or even divine providence.

Opinions like this is basically everything that's wrong with the modern Left. The more dangerous aspect of this idea is that they're trying to claim that "white people" (by which they mean Trump supporters, obviously, because those are axiomatically synonymous, I guess) is that they're ignoring that most of the world is super unhappy with democracy right now. Actually, they're angry with just about everything right now.

And the problem with that is that pinning things on white people and claiming that they alone support authoritarian inclinations and intolerance is both ahistorical, but importantly doesn't actually attempt to fix the underlying problems. It's easy to point to some hick in West Virginia wearing a swastika and proclaim "This is what's wrong with America!" Like if you just got rid of the worst inclinations of some white people, this isn't going to change the fact that the Philippines, Turkey, Venezuela, India, and other countries are increasingly falling to authoritarian inclinations (let alone countries that have long since fallen to this like Saudi Arabia, Iran, North Korea, etc).

Like, maybe we could dig deeper and understand why basically everyone on the planet feels a sense of intense injustice and social unrest. Maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with the way the world's economic system is setup.

Riiiiiiiight. The WH has flipped GOP to Dem and back several times...but thats because white conservative. The House and Senate have flipped party leadership numerous times, but thats because white conservatives. The governorship across the country have flipped party affiliation numerous times, but you know...white conservatives. The country's entire history of presidential elections governed by the Electoral College, with 29 democrat presidents and 24 republican presidents have been controlled by White Conservatives.

You people are so desperate to fabricate racial hatred that you dont even think about the ridiculous **** that you spew.

nof what I would label as "moderate" view of the real world but that's obviously your opinion.

The anti-democratic institutions have severed conservatives more markedly in recent years. I have observed, on a more virulent conservative forum, Republicans argue that we need to preserve the Electoral College to prevent the depraved Democrats in the "big city" states from taking over the country.
