in all probability it is because of those vast distances we haven't been able to pick up any signs
Additionally, I think a lot of scientists are now beginning to suspect that galactic radiation may actually scramble most radio signals beyond recognition after they leave the protection of the solar system anyway.
This could easily account for why we haven't received any signals from other civilizations.
