Are there any specific books or kinds of books that shouldn't be in public school libraries?

Are there any specific books, kinds of books or book topics that you think shouldn't be in public school libraries?

For discussion sake, here's some examples of book topics:

Books with...
Gun violence
Explicit sex
The N word
Killing animals
Murder
Abortion
Cultural appropriation

Are there any books, book topics, book genres, etc. that you wouldn't want your child's teacher to use for instruction?

And, a related question, should parents have a say in what books are (or aren't) in public school libraries or books teachers are using for instruction in the classroom?

Porn, political propaganda, works of social engineering, pre-pubescent sexual manipulation disguised as healthcare.

1) Not really, no.

2) I would stay stop using the "parental rights" argument as a cover for bigotry. It's that simple.

3) All the "sexualizing" and "grooming" kids arguments are the same old tired rehash of the anti-gay "Focus on the Family" and Family Research Council bullshit from the 90s and 2000s when they argued that educating your kids was akin to trying to turn them gay. It's the same bullshit in different form.

What are some examples of books "written or promoted by blue-haired vegan witches" that have been censored in public schools?

I didn't say there were. I simply answered the question: "Are there any specific books, kinds of books or book topics that you think shouldn't be in public school libraries?"

Which parents? Are you saying all parents think alike? Are you proposing the curriculum be voted on by parents rather than set by the school board?

I can't answer your questions until you answer mine. Your list would wipe out the entire world and American history departments. Maybe that's the goal?

Okay, what are some examples of books "written or promoted by blue-haired vegan witches" that you believe should be censored in public schools? Actual books, not categories of books.

You obviously can't read or understand basic English. Reread the OP's question and feel stupid on your own time.

Have a great weekend.

I asked you a direct question and you refuse to answer it. Not a good look for your side.

But by all means, continue to show the world your far-right agenda of censorship in public schools. (y)

No.

Righties are showing a rare moment of honesty when they believe schools should only teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. They hate science and history and would replace them with pseudoscience and nationalist propaganda given the chance.

In fact, one could make the case that many schools teach such a whitewashed version of US history that it might as well be propaganda.

Add that to "written or promoted by blue-haired vegan witches."

Seems like you want to censor all the cool shit!

None? All books -- no matter their content -- should be in public school libraries?

Did you realize your doctor question made no sense? :)
Which parents?
The parents of children at the school.

No.

No. They should know what the curriculum is and have input, though.

My list was just a discussion starter. I'm not for removing books with all of those things from public school libraries.
Maybe that's the goal?

How about us Non-Parents who pay exactly the same school taxes as parents all our lives to instruct K-12 youth on how to be well adjusted, well informed, and well rounded adult citizens? We have to pay, but can't play?

I don't want the future leaders and citizens of America to be restricted (indoctrinated) in what bits and pieces they are presented (or not), just to appease the vocal few imposing personal mores and directives. Please save the hyperbolic comments of pure forms of porn (yes, there are lines that can be drawn), and bigoted propaganda and vitriolic partisanship of the textural or pictorial.

Everything is relative. The N word, is historical in context and unless you discuss why it's inappropriate you don't solve anything or stop it. Same with most of the topics listed. Dealing with controversial topics is beyond most writters ability and certainly above most public school teachers and counselors. Less is more in most of these cases. I'd say explicit sex doesn't have a need in a public school library and the younger the age level the less needed are most of the listed topics. Some things are truly inappropriate and others are disliked because they offend someone or some group. If we go on the tendency to cancel topics because someone is "offended" we will not have anything left.

Let me put it this way; I wouldn't ban any books from the library.
Did you realize your doctor question made no sense? :)
It did, but not the way I wrote it, which is why I edited it out. My point is that we don't second-guess other professionals. Only the school board.
The parents of children at the school.

No.
Those two are connected. Have you got the connection?
No. They should know what the curriculum is and have input, though.
The curriculum is available to anyone, not just parents. What kind of input? Either they have a binding vote or not. Everyone is free to offer their opinions to the school board, again, not only parents.

I see no purpose in removing something from a public school library that is available at any of the local city and county libraries. Looks like feel-good aggression rooted in control issues.

I think we should open children up to all of reality, not hide it from them.

There's no line at all?

You think you should never question doctors?

Input into what they think about the curriculum being chosen. Ultimately, it's up to the school board to make the decision.

Probably Henry Miller wouldn't be a good idea.

There's no line at all?
No. No child should be reduced to a lowest common denominator. If I have an 8th grade daughter who is capable and mature enough for <you pick the adult-oriented title>, I don't need my idiot neighbors telling me otherwise, especially legally.

If ignorant parents can't control their children to the point they need the schools to babysit their kids' reading curiosities, then a book list can be set up and access restricted by parental permission. Problem solved.
You think you should never question doctors?
That's not what I said.

This option already exists. Here, watch.

That's not what I said.

You said "we don't second guess other professionals" --- in reference to your now-deleted doctor statement. You absolutely should second-guess professionals sometimes. They aren't always right.

That video has nothing to do with curriculum.

Never heard of him. What does he write?
Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, those are good starters. He wrote between the two WW's as an American expat in Paris. He's been dead a long time.
