Are there any specific books or kinds of books that shouldn't be in public school libraries?

If we are talking about an elementary school library, these books should not be available.
If we are talking about a high school, for most of the books I would have no problem. I don't believe there should be a training guide/book on how to commit gun violence or killing animals. Explicit sex? Is this part of sex education at the high school level or are you talking about porn?
It should be age appropriate.

Should parents have a say in books used by teachers? Yes
I don't want a teacher teaching my grandkids about killing animals or topics not age appropriate. Why can't we stick to math, science, gym, English, history, art and music?
A lot of these kids can't even balance a check book at the high school level, but we should concentrate on topics that will not help them get a job.

What is the average high school reading level?
A compilation of the top 40 books teens in grades 9-12 are reading in school shows that the average reading level of that list is 5.3 -- barely above the fifth grade. "A fifth-grade reading level is obviously not high enough for college-level reading.
Even though the students can't read, they can look at the pictures in the explicit sex books.
With online banking, this isn't necessary.

Books with images glorifying guns should be banned before explicitly sex or whatever.

Just banned in schools or banned altogether?

you did not answer the question ===== you avoided answering the question because you have no idea what you are talking about.

This is what people do to muddle a discussion: claim that answered questions weren't answered.

It's lazy, and more importantly it's dishonest. Goodbye, Razoo.

Could I add one thing to parents having a say? It should be local parents ONLY and they should be required to demonstrate that they have actually read the book.

I find it almost impossible to believe that any parent could object to the Harry Potter series or Huck Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird after discovering the moral lessons they teach. Many of these book bannings are spearheaded by national groups with no ties to the community and they rile up parents ignorant of the books themselves. I honestly don't know what they are hoping to achieve.

The Harry Potter banners are the ultra fundamentalists who think it teaches witchcraft when really it's a brilliant story about good v. evil. Although, there might be some on the left wanting her books removed due to her comments recently...... I haven't heard of any saying that yet. I think her books are too popular to be canceled.

The Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird banners are more toward the left.

All of them are perfectly fine to be in public school libraries.

Everywhere. Its vile crap that no respectable society should tolerate.

Ah. So ... just books? What about movies, video games, etc.?

So why did you say it?

Answer: No

THE anti american right wing nut ALEC GOP RINO party has been bringing this up since at least the
Reagan/Bush administration......since 1980.

There is no evidence these type of books are in public school libraries, private school libraries or
any children's libraries in the USA.

Mmmkay, well those are photographs. This thread is about books….
Shows you what kinds of books they read...

Are there any specific books, kinds of books or book topics that you think shouldn't be in public school libraries?

For discussion sake, here's some examples of book topics:

Books with...
Gun violence
Explicit sex
The N word
Killing animals
Murder
Abortion
Cultural appropriation

Are there any books, book topics, book genres, etc. that you wouldn't want your child's teacher to use for instruction?

And, a related question, should parents have a say in what books are (or aren't) in public school libraries or books teachers are using for instruction in the classroom?

In elementary schools:
all you listed is pretty much a given IMO

In middle school:
unless in a book used for historic instruction - most of what you mentioned.

In high school, as a subject matter:
explicit sex
killing animals
murder

In my opinion, until high school, education should be concentrated on mainly the basics (reading, writing, math, sciences, history) Too many kids cannot even spell very well, yet we seem to want to make sure they educated on social issues instead.

Yes, parents should be able to have input in what books are used for instruction if it's not related to the basics as I mentioned above.

I could go on a whole rant about this. We aren't (at least the schools I'm aware of) doing enough phonemic awareness and phonics instruction in PK-2.

There most definitely is explicit sex in novels in public school libraries. Also drug use, abuse and gun violence. In elementary children's books, the outcry is mostly about cultural appropriate, racism, etc.

Books that explain how to build nuclear weapons maybe

Books that explain how to build nuclear weapons maybe

Just nuclear? lol

I'd say books that explain how to make any kind of weapon.......

Well I would have nothing against a book explaining how to make/use a forge even though that could be used to make a knife/sword. Books on nuclear physics however....
