Are there any specific books or kinds of books that shouldn't be in public school libraries?

Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer, Black Spring, those are good starters. He wrote between the two WW's as an American expat in Paris. He's been dead a long time.

Ahhhh....erotic novels. Agreed that those shouldn't be in public school libraries.

Are there any specific books, kinds of books or book topics that you think shouldn't be in public school libraries?

For discussion sake, here's some examples of book topics:

Books with...
Gun violence
Explicit sex
The N word
Killing animals
Murder
Abortion
Cultural appropriation

Are there any books, book topics, book genres, etc. that you wouldn't want your child's teacher to use for instruction?

And, a related question, should parents have a say in what books are (or aren't) in public school libraries or books teachers are using for instruction in the classroom?

I find nothing more vulgar than gun porn.

Kids should not be exposed.

They weren't just erotic, but plenty of that mixed in. I loved him when I was in my 20's.

Sounds very Colleen Hoover-esque.

I never heard of her. We're even. (And now I'm curious.)

Oooooh....... you MUST read Verity. I bet it will be turned into a movie.

If we are talking about an elementary school library, these books should not be available.
If we are talking about a high school, for most of the books I would have no problem. I don't believe there should be a training guide/book on how to commit gun violence or killing animals. Explicit sex? Is this part of sex education at the high school level or are you talking about porn?
It should be age appropriate.

Should parents have a say in books used by teachers? Yes
I don't want a teacher teaching my grandkids about killing animals or topics not age appropriate. Why can't we stick to math, science, gym, English, history, art and music?
A lot of these kids can't even balance a check book at the high school level, but we should concentrate on topics that will not help them get a job.

What is the average high school reading level?
A compilation of the top 40 books teens in grades 9-12 are reading in school shows that the average reading level of that list is 5.3 -- barely above the fifth grade. "A fifth-grade reading level is obviously not high enough for college-level reading.
Even though the students can't read, they can look at the pictures in the explicit sex books.

Explicit sex in fiction books.

Almost all novels are around 3rd-5th reading level. Some are higher, of course.

And the sexually explicit books I'm talking about have no pictures except the ones you create in your own mind. :)

Do you have an example?
Sure, the kind of gun porn our legislators engage in.

Pics of a deplorable family.

or lip-sticked pigs with guns.

Books with images glorifying guns should be banned before explicitly sex or whatever.

I didn't say there were. I simply answered the question: "Are there any specific books, kinds of books or book topics that you think shouldn't be in public school libraries?"
you did not answer the question ===== you avoided answering the question because you have no idea what you are talking about.

Gun violence, explicit sex, the N word, killing animals, murder, abortion, and cultural appropriation are elements found in numerous great/historic works of literature, part of many schools curriculums so, no.
And, a related question, should parents have a say in what books are (or aren't) in public school libraries or books teachers are using for instruction in the classroom?
“A say”? Yes. Control of curriculum? No.

The Art of the Deal.

Same!! He wrote a fantastic US road trip book called The Air-conditioned Nightmare.

Could I add one thing to parents having a say? It should be local parents ONLY and they should be required to demonstrate that they have actually read the book.

I find it almost impossible to believe that any parent could object to the Harry Potter series or Huck Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird after discovering the moral lessons they teach. Many of these book bannings are spearheaded by national groups with no ties to the community and they rile up parents ignorant of the books themselves. I honestly don't know what they are hoping to achieve.

Excellent points.

Oh, I'll bet that was something. Never heard of it before (also didn't know we had air conditioning in 1939).

It was published in 1945, so maybe? Anyways, it was after he came back to the States after having lived in Paris for a decade.
And to answer the OP, no books should be banned.
