Well you don't really expect a person who makes less money to benefit as much from a tax rate cut as a person who makes much more.
It's a deceptive argument.

Can you honestly show me that the taxes were cut equally across the board for all incomes brackets?? No you can't.. Many of the tax cuts only applied to the rich.. How many poor folks do you know benefitting off the decrease in capital gains tax??

GE paid no taxes last year.. Why did you or I pay taxes then?? If GE who made billions in profit didn't pay any.. Why did we??

Those who are poor and elderly should get their benefits. Those who are still prospering should be cutoff. They don't need it and it is insane that poor young people are being taxed to support them.

WHo pays thier benefits..what about the poor the disabled its not just elderly...WHO PAYS for that and how

Honestly you're not listening.
That's been the problem all along.

You guys have been taking the political hyperbole and have been repeating it as if it were truth.
The arguments for privatization and partial privatization have nearly always been for far future retirees and not for the near future retirees.

Current benefits need to be means tested and tapered off, with the institution of conservatively managed personal accounts, with the option for some people to take on more risk.

Privitization harry only works if people make enough to participate...what do you do with all the unemployed and underemployed...your not listening....privitization ALWAYS leads to decreased or lousy service and increased costs because the pigs at the trough stick their hands in it.....your not listening harry there will be millions with no pensions no healthcare not able to care for themselves...who pays for that and how.
You and others keep wanting me to buy into ...Oh piece of cake get rid of Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid no employers provide any pensions or healthcare so the pigs at the trough can pocket lots more...and its just going to be all PuuuuurFECT everyone will prosper...HORSE**** harry...sorry buddy Ive lived through too many of these same kind of scams

ipast you hit the nail right on the head, With a declining job market and 44 million americans now living in poverty tell me how they are going to be able to save for the future, I have to laugh the repubs want them to invest for the future in the biggest Ponzi scheme ever known to human kind "Wall Street"

I would only add this: privatization without regulation is a bad idea. Big government is also not the answer.

I'm supposed to believe that like 1 of 8 Americans is living in poverty? Hah. The "poverty line" is BS. We shouldn't be saving, we should be spending on education and living 10 to a room when necessary.

When someone considers the crown gem of the well-regulated free-market world to be a ponzi scheme, well... one has to wonder.

What happens to such a person?? This isn't really to you CC, but it sickens me to see the number of people here that simply think people are lazy and want to be on SS.. I am sure there is some fraud out there.. There is fraud in anything.. But I never hear anyone condemn banks or bank customers because some people rob banks..
Daily Kos: $22 trillion Social Security surplus revealed on C-SPAN

It sickens me the number of people that simply ARE lazy and want to be there. The anecdotal evidence I described is real and meet with those types of people. Daily. Its not an exaggeration...those were both 100% real accounts of actual individuals. And let me ask you...what kind of quality of life do you think those people have? Do you think it really HELPS people like that? We take perfectly caple able bodied individuals and we create emotional cripples. 19 years olds...20 year oldsthier 'crime is they grew up in homes where this was the norm, and instead of the system working to provide actual assistance we slap labels on them, throw drugs at them, have zero expectation of success and 100% expectation that they WILL fail. And it is amazing how well people live to their expectations.

Not ALL. Not even the MAJORITY. Hell...the majority and especially some of the ones you described...the Autistic, the mentally retarded, those with true medical needs...their care is typically and reasonably consistent. And those are the people that SHOULD have acccess to those resources. MY comments have never been directed to thise truly in need. Ive been clear about that. We SHOULD be helping those that cant and where needed...hands up for those that can but have never been shown how and dont believe that they can.

I'm supposed to believe that like 1 of 8 Americans is living in poverty? This I do not know about.. It could be said that my wife and I are living in "poverty". This is a word that needs a full and complete definition.Hah. The "poverty line" is BS. We shouldn't be saving, we should be spending on education and living 10 to a room when necessary..

When someone considers the crown gem of the well-regulated free-market world to be a ponzi scheme, well... one has to wonder. Yes!, I do wonder...9 percent unemployment...a crumbling infrastructure...the rich becoming richer...the poor becoming poorer..I tend to lean toward the "ponzi scheme", rather than a so-called crown gem...
"ten to a room", thats poverty, IMO.

I think current old people need thier social security... young people like me... i dont want it when im older, i want it completely gone over a long period of time.

Rather selfish, I'd say.
And short sighted. Thank goodness that "libertarians" are in a low minority.

Considering the amount of money that people pay into the soc. sec from every paycheck, whatever they receive back when they get older, is only a pitance of what they've paid in. ......
It looks like we'll do very well with our SS checks if we look at them as an investment. Definitely not a pittance.

One is apt to not live long enough to draw every dime he/she has involuntarily been made to pay into it. ......
It is not intended to be just a retirement annunity. It's also an insurance program for many that get sick and can't work. We have this situation in our extended family, but he hasn't qualified for a few years because of the restrictive qualifying rules. He was injured at work caused by defectively repaired chair. He'd rather return to work.

And if the powers that be, would keep their greedy hands off of it, or at the very least, pay back what they steal from it, there would be no problem with soc. sec. ......
Yes, SS taxes should only be used for SS benifits and not be on any other budget. Who does this anyway?

Also, sit in the waiting room and check out the ages of many that are getting money that have not even come close to retirement age and look able bodied enough to be out working. Hmmmmm.......scam jobs. They've figured out a way to steal money from those that have paid into all their working lives. ......
You are writing about my extended family member again. I guess in your investigation you looked at medical records and verified the payments to these people. Good work if you did it. A lie if you didn't.

I can also smell the stench of mega soc sec bucks being handed over to illegals..... ......
Did you know that illegals pay far more into SS than they ever get. They are the ones that really get ripped off. They are helping pay for my SS checks. How do you not know this?

And yet..........many think the elderly aren't worthy of drawing what is theirs...........Bruhahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....Give me a break......
Yes, becaused we saved and smartly invested and did well.

You're right. People who don't pay taxes don't benefit directly from tax cuts.

It was a tax rate cut, across the board.
How can tax cuts help people who already don't pay federal taxes anyway?
The EITC was expanded under Bush, so they definitely helped lower income people.

Part of it is because GE has business ventures that don't operate in the U.S. another is that GE took advantage of the Green Energy business tax credits and yet another is that GE wrote off losses like every other business can do.

Then why are low income people expected to pay into both Medicare and SS?

That sounds pretty regressive to me, especially when there is no guarantee that they will live to see those benefits.

Harry Guerrilla, you post the following qoute "I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.
—Adam Shepard"

If someone is borne with a very small defect causing an arachnoid cyst then “discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end” still applies to that someone who through much effort in now almost able to live independently, with the assistance of more than $1000 per month retail in drugs. I agree with this Adam Shepard quote, but generally not you.

Of course it's different but that doesn't mean one can't accomplish it.
It's far easier to make excuses and never save a dime.

What you are also missing is an understanding of Tea Party supporters. I met with Tea Party individuals at a demonstration. Two older folks there were carrying signs that read “NO GOV HEALTH CARE”, but to me they looked old enough to be on Medicare. They were on Medicare. They explained to me that they didn’t want the government taking Medicare over and messing with it.

What part of SS being an investment is hard for some people to understand? People put money into this system, largely against their will but also with the promise that it would be some support for later on. It was given with the knowledge that we are a hard working society and we want to take care of our elderly, after they have put in their work.

SS has been eroded because successive administrations and congress members have voted to take money out of it for diversion to other projects. The money should have been made sacrosanct from the start. If a bank did this to your investment and couldn't cover the return funds, the bank would get sued or they would go under as every member would withdraw its investments. Yet it's okay for government to do it, and sometimes for completely arbitrary purposes.

People are entitled to this money. I agree reforms are needed - such as not letting the government touch this money - but the money MUST be there when they retire, as promised. It's not selfish or "liberal" to require this. It's getting what you are already owed - it's YOUR money. That's why it's called an entitlement payment. You are entitled to get it, and they are required to give it to you.

As for welfare and other social services... those are more up for debate. I find myself agreeing more and more with drug testing. But I agree with CC that the rehab offered must be effective, otherwise people will be put through a harrowing ordeal that is not ultimately helping them.

None of it was ever invested. It was spent by governments elected by the elderly and mostly consumed by them. Why should current and future workers be forced to pay the elderly back for money they loaned to themselves and spent?

They are owed nothing. I am sure their grandchildren will do the right thing and take care of them the best they can. But they need to shut up with this entitlement bs. They are receiving welfare.

Sorry, I have to reply again. A Tea Party family was at the demonstration, father, mother and one 10 year old son; two more at home. My wife and I chatted with them. The father is a vet that started serving just after the Viet War ended. He was disposing of Agent Orange; which in our opinion may have been the source of his health problems. He had a heart attack about 6 months earlier. Went to the hospital where his wife works as a low level employee. What she said she did only pays low wages. They can’t afford the extra for family health insurance, she was the only one insured since that can’t be refused for more pay. His bill was about $15,000. Her wages were garnished by the hospital; it’s only a small garnishment so it will take a very long time to pay it off. Again, they were there with a Don’t Tread On Me flag and more.
