Texas has closed a record 750 polling places from 2012 to 2018 affecting disproportionately persons of color. My guess is Republicans everywhere fear democracy, because when we have fair elections, they think they have a tougher time getting elected. Apparently more people do not want republicans than those that do. This, for them, poses a problem. Yet Republicans are accusing Democrats of rigging the election, for which they have no evidence, when they are trying to legally do it, for which we have tons of evidence. Republicans, therefore, are engaging in a massive projection scheme.

Guardian analysis finds that places where black and Latino population is growing by the largest numbers experienced the majority of closures and could benefit Republicans

A report by civil rights group The Leadership Conference Education Fund found that 750 polls had been closed statewide since 2012.

The closures could exacerbate Texas’s already chronically low voter turnout rates, to the advantage of incumbent Republicans. Ongoing research by University of Houston political scientists Jeronimo Cortina and Brandon Rottinghaus indicates that people are less likely to vote if they have to travel farther to do so, and the effect is disproportionately greater for some groups of voters, such as Latinxs.

“The fact of the matter is that Texas is not a red state,” said Antonio Arellano of Jolt, a progressive Latino political organization. “Texas is a nonvoting state.”

I agree , it's about demographics. The Guardian has had excellent coverage of what happened in both Harris and Terrant county in the last election. Both the Chronicle and the Texas Tribune have been on top of the story the whole time.

It's about becoming a minority. That's the fear. Dirty tricks are the answer.

If you view everything through racist eyes all you will see is racism.

Take one of the very popular Castro bother Julian. He won with 29k votes, in a city on 1.5 million.

A rising star can only get 29k votes out of 1.5 million, think about that.

Texas is a non voting state but that's by choice not suppression.

Anything to lie, cheat, and steal. And no doubt we're about to see a bitterly dishonest both-sides comment comparing different things of different scales/severity, all deployed to defend it.

sounds like the good ole boys network doesn't it?

Voter suppression is disgusting.

Most republicans do, they can't win if everybody votes running on their pandering to racists morons, their dishonest, and their worship of the uber rich. it's why they freaked after Trump lost and are fightintg making it easier to vote in many red states.

they pander to the minority and they know it

Absolute crap, and notice no actual refutation of the fact. is there such a thing as an honest conservative? No, they probably wouldn't be a conservatives if they believe in reality and facts

that's why so many red states have passed laws making it harder to vote, to limit mail in voting (no reason to not make it easier to vote), fill Trump flunkees on elections boards, and some even tried to pass laws to allow the state legislature to overturn election. Or the decades of gerrymandering where Republicans get millions of less votes, but pick up many more seats

or the last 2 republican presidents who were elected while losing the popular vote. Or how in the senate states with $1M people have the same power as those with many millions more? Minority rule over majority

When racism is brought up in this context, it's generally because one can demonstrate that the legislature in question went with maps that cut up minority communities in weird ways to water down their vote. With maybe 4-12% of black people voting GOP in any given elections, it's not hard to sniff out a motive.

Ditto when it comes to polling places.

It's not all racist specifically. Sometimes it's more power for power's sake, like WI following up its voter ID law by extending hours in R-heavy areas while closing polling places and limiting hours in various D areas. The bad motives overlap.

But you know . . .

If you view everything through racist eyes all you will see is racism.

Whereas if you close your eyes whenever racism is the topic, you single-handedly defeat racism.

What a bunch of lies! The voting in a district is controlled by that local voting district, not by the state. So, each town has its own Supervisor of Elections who oversees the election and where polling places are put. Locally the polling places that were closed were being underused. Show us one instance where a person of color was turned away from a polling place or had to drive an inordinate amount of time to get to a polling place. Even that article stated that "The closures could exacerbate Texas’s already chronically low voter turnout rates". So, Texas has too many polling places and closes some due to low voter turnout.

Hasn't Texas has record turn-outs in the last few elections? Seems like every story I see abou Texas elections reports record numbers of "people of color", hispanics particularly, showing up and voting - for Republicans.

So because you arent able to comprehend the electoral college... voting is racist

2nd generation minority immigrants have nearly the same voting patterns as white people

Greater numbers doesn't disprove suppression. Numbers have been increasing across the board. All it means is that the numbers could have been even greater, and this is what is driving republicans because they only thing they can do to win is to suppress the ever increasing numbers in any scheme they can come up with.

Nice dodge; so then what exact do you cite as proof for suppression?

Not in 25 words or less, but an entire film has been devoted to the issue, with documentation, which is free members of Amazon Prime, it's called 'Rigged'.

But of course, you won't watch it.

Here is a clip from the movie Rigged of republican operatives caught red handed admitting the real reason for voter ID

The film is over an hour of documented evidence of republican voter suppression.
