Their incompetence leads some people to believe that science is incompetent.

What we get from the media is whatever sells the most air time. You can believe the weather forecast for the next couple of days, at least most of the time. If they report that some idiot ran a stop sign and killed someone, that is generally true, even though they seldom say it just that way. Stick ups, murders, and deranged individuals who beat their children are duly reported. When it comes to science, they have to be careful not to alienate their non scientifically literate audience, as they will change the channel and then buy the soap, cars, or prescription drugs being hawked by someone else instead.
