Any thoughts on whether Putin would ever send troops to a NATO nation?

The results would be catastrophic. The Russian military couldn't even remotely stand up to the military of the USA and NATO. Any conventional war, so configured, would end swiftly and terribly for Russia.

That would leave Russia with only one option - - nukes. And that truly unthinkable as Russia would be vaporized in this scenario as well. And losses would be horrific in the US and Europe.

Could Putin be that crazy? It's one thing to be an unprincipled bully, it's another to be batshit crazy. So much as blinking at a NATO country falls into the latter category.

Only if Trump were re-elected.

I think we may find out. Imo, putin is looking to create a pathway to connect Russia to Kaliningrad. If he does that, he has to go through Lithuania.

Of course, he could.

He is like Hitler, who attacked Poland, even though England warned it would be war.

Hitler ended up killing himself in a bunker.

So that man in the Kremlin might chance attacking a NATO country, for as he reminds us: Russia is a nuclear power.

Hopefully, some Russian bigwigs who do not relish perishing in a nuclear conflict will take some corrective action.

I believe Russia would wipe out the US very quickly as all recent AI computer information has indicated .

But that thought of yours is very interesting though Kaliningrad is supposed to be the most well defended enclave on the planet .Poland would not be very happy, though they need 40% of their gas from Russia

On whether Putin would or not.....I would like to say, probably not as it would lead to World War 3. And while he is already taking a page from Hitler in his invasion of Ukraine, he must know that a war with NATO would crush him. How much further he goes after Ukraine likely depends on how much Europe appeases him. If he continues to see weakness in western will, ultimately he may decide that he wants East Germany and Romania back.

Russia is a rusty old gas station in the world economy. If it comes to blows, there is no way Russia could stand up to the American military. The US could drop a division of Marines in Kamchatka and the only response Russia could make would be nuclear. Does putin want to die?

Regarding the bolded section. History is sometimes a reasonable source for predicting the future or at least an approximation of predicting about how things will turn out. The bolded section reflects the thinking of Napoleon Bonaparte and much of his command staff in 1811-1812. Two years later Napoleon was defeated decisively (but alas only temporarily) and his Grande Armée was in ruins. The thinking which I bolded also closely reflects the very educated conclusions of many of the German High Command's decision makers in 1940-1941. They thought the USSR's government and armed forces would collapse quickly after an all out invasion by Nazi Germany and its allies. The Germans killed, captured, recruited and enslaved millions of Russians during the Great Patriotic War/War in the East but they could not break the Soviet state nor defeat the Red Army. Invading Russia was their ruin just like Napoleon and others.

But yes, Putin is a maniacal gambler with what he believes is a manifest destiny to recreate the Russian Empire. He is prone to very dangerous brinksmanship and might just risk attacking NATO if he calculated that he had already or could soon shatter the alliance somehow.

Cheers and be well.

Nobody thought Hitler would try what he tried.

Don't worry too much. If he attacks you guys we'll come save your ass for the 3rd time.

Conventional thinking: Putin knows that would leader to nuclear annihilation, so he'd never do it. The MAD theory.

Putin: Hm, if I take one small part of a NATO country, the west doesn't want nuclear war to destroy them, would they really respond with one? No. So why not?

Putin is only sending troops where he already knows that NATO will not do a damn thing about. Were people still thinking about Crimea a few week ago? NO.

WE created this monster, and a reason for Putin to make this move is because when political leaders in some of the NATO nations while running for office, and wanting to act tough and puff up for attention talked about expanding NATO further East, you think the Russians were not listening to that? If China was talking about sending "defensive" missiles to Mexico, and making Mexico party of a Chinese security alliance, do you think we would like that?

Like it or not the Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus----are all part of the Russian sphere of influence. How is the Russian perspective on this any different than the United States Monroe Doctrine? If we are NEVER willing to see how our policies are viewed by other nations, then no wonder they don't respect us when they have their own nationalistic policies. Russia is not Denmark, the Russians have their nationalistic goals and exceptions the same way China, Britain, and USA does.

Russia probably thinks that they don't need to answer about Crimea or this eastern portion of the Ukraine they will occuying before Britain gives Northern Ireland back to Ireland---or the USA gives Hawaii back to the Hawians.

I know you Americans are desperate to believe that but it is not what the experts tell us .

Regardless, America would have to do it with' bombs' because their track record when soldiers are involved is diabolical -- they never win .

Cannot .
Not ' will not . '
NATO cannot enter a country and defend it as NATO unless that country is a NATO member .

And nobody would dare take on the Spetsnaz without an airport to land in or a port to enter . Except the Irish maybe after a few drinks .

I guess you forgot Yorktown...
