Obviously, any statements being made by the Taliban have to be taken with an enormous grain of salt. No question a watchful eye will need to be kept.
But according to the Taliban spokesman they are guaranteeing no attacks on America will come from Afghanistan. They have also said that they will continue to allow women and girls to attend school.
Obviously, time will tell and we shouldn't exactly take them on their word, but is there any chance they could be telling the truth?
After all, the Taliban did not attack us on 9/11, Al Qaeda did. Granted they were hiding out in Afghanistan, but attempting to protect them got the Taliban almost 20 years of war and exile.
We know for sure that historically the Taliban's treatment of women and girls was horrible, as it was in many Muslim countries. But that was 20 years ago. In many other Muslim nations, there has been progress in these areas.
If the Taliban wants to have any hope of winning over women in this country it is going to be hard to go back now that they've tasted more freedom. If every woman in the country flees that's going to cause some problems.
Is it all possible that the Taliban is as sick and tired of war as we are? Is it possible that now that they have control of their country again they will want to enjoy their victory, relax and stay out of the spotlight for a while?
Not ruffle any feathers and repair some of the divides in their own country?
