Conservative Republicans have recruited a former CIA staffer and top House GOP aide to launch an independent White House bid -- and he could cause problems for Donald Trump in a key state if he gets on the ballot.

Evan McMullin opened his bid for the White House Monday morning, announcing on his website: "It's never too late to do the right thing. And if we work together, there's nothing we can't achieve.".

Looks like the division within the Republican Party is such that some would prefer to sacrifice the White House altogether to supporting Trump.

Foolishness.

They would do better to support the Libertarian candidates and increase the chance of a viable third-party challenge to both Trump and Hillary.

Sure, if they want to Perot the election and give Georgia to Hillary - there are already indications that this will happen.

Ruh oh...he's a Mormon....ex-CIA....and former Goldman Sachs investor. He's an elitists dream.

Sorry, but this is stupid. If they had wanted to put a conservative alternative for Trump out there, they should have done it in time and not when the die is cast. All this will do is dilute the republican vote even more. With Trump, this guy and former republican Gary Johnson leading the libertarians, the right wing vote is diluted enough.

With Hillary maybe picking up a few percent of Republicans, the GOP and it's candidate do not need another guy to siphon off more of the potential Trump vote.

And remember, I am totally anti-Trump but the primaries have been, he has won, the never Trump movement petered out at the convention so the game is up. The never Trump people can say they will not vote for him and call on others not to vote for him, but to put another candidate in this late in the game who can NEVER win is just petty and childish, but that is just my opinion.

The people that fund and own both parties cannot afford a Perot that might actually win right now. Trump is proof the people are fed up with the illusion of choice the 2 party system has usually provided us. The rich and powerful just want to make sure the candidate they don't own does not get in the White House. Stop Trump by using the media. Even owning congress and SCOTUS is not really enough because Trump is out spoken and will make it apparent to the American people the rich and powerful are stopping any chance of a government by the people, of the people, and for the people.

The powers that be do not want another party. They just need to stop the wild card they don't own and control.

Any voter with genuine "conservative" values in this election will vote Johnson & Weld. One who doesn't is just kidding himself.

Yeah, but that is assuming that conservatives would feel any more at home with Libertarians than they do Trump's GOP.

I have genuine "conservative" values. I will not kid myself into believing that Johnson & Weld could possibly win. My voting for them will only increase the likelihood of Clinton becoming the 45th President of the United States.

Johnson and Weld are both hardcore supporters of TPP. Hell no.

It's bottom of the barrel. He has more experience than Trump, but never held political office. McMullin has inclinations that are closer to Cruz than Kasich, with about the same amount of specific policy agendas as Trump or Cruz (I.e. Close to zilch).

Conservatives really are thriving on the message that all they have to offer is inclination or attitude.

So then, is it safe to say you see the presidential contest more as a horse race than an effort to establish responsible government?

Johnson and Weld are both hardcore supporters of TPP. Hell no.

I would have to hear, or be shown, that either of them have taken that position.

Absolutely true. The #NeverTrump folks are desperate to stop him. I don't think there is a line they won't cross to do that.
They will do anything or say anything to destroy him and his campaign.

Yes, you uncovered our secret. I am the one who forces Trump to send out stupid tweets. And some of the others of us are the ones standing behind him, pulling the strings and moving his mouth, forcing him to say stupid things. It's like Weekend at Bernie's. Without us, Trump would just be a brilliant candidate.

Oh, please. Trump's destroying his campaign himself.

Just did a quick check at LP party platform and associated views. The LP is against trade agreements, and specifically states it is against NAFTA. I'm going with common sense and assume they feel the same about TPP.

If you could provide some source showing contrary, I would be greatly appreciative.

Gary Johnson supports the TPP and has supported NAFTA in the past, although I can't find a current statement from him about it.
