(CBS) With many polls indicating the Republicans may win back control of the House of Representatives (and possibly the Senate as well) in the upcoming mid-term elections, Jim VandeHei, the executive editor of Politico, told CBS' "Face the Nation" that the Obama administration is in a horrible position.

"Does the White House understand this?" asked guest host Harry Smith. "Do you feel any sense of panic or concern" on the part of the administration?

"They get it. There's panic. There's concern," VandeHei said. "The reality for this administration stinks, politically and practically, when it comes to the economy. You're not going to be able to change that 9.6-percent unemployment figure. You can't get anything from Congress in the next couple of months."

"There's a lot of frustration on Capitol Hill among Democrats who feel like the President led them down this path. They didn't all necessarily want to deal with health care. This was on the president's agenda, and then they felt like he kind of hung them out to dry."

"Not a single Democrat has run an ad in support of the health care bill since April," VandeHei noted.

Cordes pointed out that Democrats are very unhappy about Mr. Obama's speech last week, only the second Oval Office prime time address in his presidency.

"What does he talk about? Not the economy, but Iraq," Cordes said. "And they say, 'No, we need to own the economy. If you’re going to use the power of your office to give a speech like that, talk about the economy."

Panic? In the White House? I find that hard to believe, I haven't seen anything from the WH to indicate they realize that Nov. is going to be, horrific for them.

The Obama administration is extremely anti business...a combo of regulation, new taxes, and passing on massive costs (mainly medical) to businesses, Obama has done more to discourage job creation than anyone I nor my pet turtle can imagine.

I guess socialism isn't working in small doses, eh?

How many unqualified Tea Party candidates are on ballots, do you reckon?

I reckon the man from the party that elected the least qualified man as President need not worry about the qualifications of the "Tea Party" backed opposition and should start worrying about how badly his chosen party is gonna get buried in Nov.

Haven't you ever heard the old saying Mr. V.

Don't count your chickens until their hatched...

Of course I couldn't care either way, you think Washintgon will magically change if Republicans take both houses or something?

If you believe that you're as misguided as the Obama supporters you rail against for believing the same thing...

Where have I said it'd magically change? Oh I haven't.

If you do a search, you'll even find me saying this is the GOP's last chance, really. They get back in power they best DO THE RIGHT thing, cause if they get don't it's over. The right thing being acting like Conservatives and having a spine. If they go back to the freespending big Govt ways of the 2000's then it's over.

Fair enough.

How people didn't see this coming is beyond me... It was clear a long time ago that the far left had taken over the Dem party. All the info was there as to what Obama's position would be. And yet, these bufoons/fools were voted into office, first with Dem control of Congress, then the WH. And just now the average person is getting upset and thinks they're doing a piss poor job... How could they not? How, with no evidence to support it, did anybody think this gig was gonna work?

I find it hard to believe to -- since there's absolutely nothing that can be done about it at THIS late date. But this I know. There is a whole slough of legislation waiting for a possible lame duck session. Hold onta' your hats.

My wife and I went to a party last weekend at a friend from work's house, and had a good time, all but for one neighbor that was there. Nice enough guy, but in one conversation he brought up the upcoming elections, and how he thought that Obama was doing a wonderful job...blah, blah, blah, you know all the talking points. Whenever someone would try and bring up any counter argument he would cut them off, interrupt, and generally be an ass.

It takes all kinds in this world, some have more tap to the kool aid than others I guess.

What qualifications are required in your estimation for public office?

Really not picturing Rahm, Obama, Axlerod and crew in panic mode. It's all politics and calculations. The first task for the WH is to do what is best for the WH. That doesn't necessarily require salvaging control of both houses. Losing the HoR may have some advantage to Obama leading up to the 2012 presidential elections. (assuming the economy remains in the tank, the GOP can then be a target of blame)

The campaign team the got Obama elected are good at what they do. Suspect they have their plans and contingencies for whatever the outcome of the midterms turns out to be......:boxer

the president's panic has been apparent in his footsteps for weeks

he's desperate for something to trumpet, some collection of headlines he can claim as his own

his first bid was auto's, he'd saved the industry, he felt

but then we saw the worst august for the carmakers, across the board, since 1983

Weak auto sales are latest sign of sluggish U.S. economy - Sep. 1, 2010

august, evidently, is a very important time for the fords and gm's...

so, obtuse obama blithely bounced over to iraq, only his second oval office address

it's been universally panned, from bill-o to rachel maddow to howie kurtz to david gergen...

to house and senate democrats

the political situation in baghdad is frozen, the combat troops remain (under a different name), the sects are seething, the little girls and grammas are still getting grenaded, and the only real winner in this sadsack, slapdash story is iran

and, naturally, when president pie-in-the-face merely utters the word, "iraq," concerned americans in all corners by course conjure up, "afghanistan," OBAMA'S WAR

so we skip off sunnily to these super hi profile mideast peace talks, a white house production, starring ms hillary in her bid for the oscar

except the dialogue excludes the popularly represented 40% of palestinians in gaza, which saw action yesterday

the putz on pennsylvania ave appears unapprised

he can't make any progress with the palestinian authority in the west bank with the brotherhood in gaza continuing disgruntled and aggrieved

and bebe is building again

meanwhile, over-his-head obama announces---PEACE IN A YEAR!

next, we have 9-11 coming up in 5 days

exactly what will oblivious barry be doing?

he can't go to new york

he can't say this and he certainly can't say THAT...

and if he says nothing he's gonna ENFURIATE americans of all persuasions, prominently including new yorkers, conspicuously featuring the msm

and, now---he's completely boxed in on the bush tax cuts

the entire economy is cowering in uncertainty---uncertainty in health care, uncertainty in cap and trade, 2000 pages of uncertainty in the reg reform

so, asked about the extension of the cuts to ALL americans, obstinately backed by lieberman, nelson, conrad and others, david plouffe on mtp yesterday said, "i don't know"

unbelievable

this white house has STILL not come down with decision on where IT stands, now that rubber's reached road, of TAXING THE RICH

are you sure these people know what they're doing?

embarrassed yet?
