WASHINGTON — Joe Biden's campaign said the second night of the Republican convention Tuesday was an attempt to create an "alternate reality" to cover up for President Donald Trump's failures. Biden's deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, accused the GOP of papering over the continuing deaths and economic suffering in the United States due to the coronavirus pandemic. "President Trump's RNC is an alternate reality," she said. "Donald Trump’s continual refusal to take this virus seriously has given the United States the worst outbreak in the world, and his convention's refusal to come to grips with reality or acknowledge the magnitude of the loss is a stark reminder to Americans of his complete failure to lead." Bedingfield said the evening offered "no plan for overcoming the pandemic." And Biden's director of Latino media, Jennifer Molina, responded to Trump's decision to host a live naturalization ceremony for the RNC proceedings with Acting Homeland Secretary Secretary Chad Wolf to swear in five new citizens. "Trump has consistently attacked our values and the contributions of immigrants," she said. "Like his many failures throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Republicans and the Trump campaign are trying to use their convention to create an alternate reality and distract from the crisis they created."

It was a revealing signal of what the Biden campaign views as important. Its statements did not echo pervasive criticisms on social media that Trump was violating norms and ethics by using the White House and the powers of the presidency as a political tool to bolster his re-election. Earlier on Tuesday, the Democratic presidential nominee shared media fact checks on Tuesday about the GOP convention on health care, crime and the coronavirus crisis. "Last night's incoherent charade was sad, underwhelming, and devoid of vision to the point that it bordered on self parody," Joe Biden's campaign said in a statement that pointed to myriad fact-checks by news organizations debunking claims regarding health care, crime and the coronavirus pandemic. Biden's opposition researcher Megan Apper tweeted on Monday night: "I can't believe that there is 3 more nights of this s---." Biden's aim has been to present himself as a competent and widely acceptable alternative to the president, who is trailing the Democrat in national and swing state polls.

Did you forget that Trump is President? Biden holds no office.

Way back in January Biden told Trump that he needed to follow the science. From the very beginning Trump has worked against the scientists. Whether it be on the wearing of masks, his reluctance to use the powers he alone has to take measures to expand testing capabilities in order to facilitate contact tracing, his general denial of the severity of the virus, or his encouraging states to reopen quickly without regard to the guidelines developed by his own administration.

He has also worked against the governors. While they were trying to get their constituents to wear masks, Trump was disparaging people that wear masks, saying that they were being politically correct and that they were wearing them to show their disapproval of him. When governors were pleading for more testing capabilities instead of using his power to mobilize industry Trump was dragging his feet. When governors were trying to follow the reopening guidelines, he was yelling LIBERATE, LIBERATE.

Trump has actively worked to make the virus WORSE! What’s up with that?

Trump sees the virus as a public relations problem not a public health problem.

Trump is hiding behind the most aggressive testing, contact tracing and quarantine program in the world set up to protect only HIM. As for the rest of us, he wants less testing because he thinks it makes him look bad. Never mind that it saves lives. That’s not important.

Regardless, the virus was already here. The real problem was community spread and many of Trump’s actions on masks, testing, and LIBERATE, LIBERATE only made community spread worse.

Yesterday, the COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. were 1,377 not 377.

But, I agree, the right-wing, which now includes Republicans, lives in an alternate reality in which Covid is in the rear-view mirror, not killing over a thousand countrymen a day.

The right bathes in conspiracy theories, which have the power to offer an easy explanation for something uncomfortable, which is why conspiracy theories thrive during times of alienation or social change. But while one conspiracy theory can be dangerous on its own, it is not a worldview. It’s when you stitch enough of them together that an alternate reality forms. It is easy for them to accept the conspiracy theory that everybody in the Obama Administration was a criminal but somehow they were able to skirt the law because the entire system is corrupt in their favor -- yet, not corrupt enough to have Hillary win the last election. Meanwhile, they ignore the actual criminality of Trump, whose last crime was violating the Hatch Act yesterday.

Since he's not a doctor, he couldn't help directly. What he DID do is run for president to rescue the country from the current president, who has done little to help. The point of the thread is that the RNC paints an opposite view of the guy who literally hyped Corona as a hoax and who spent months denying it was a problem that would magically go away (by election time.)
