Finally, something tangible that can be pointed to to show that the overwhelming majority of Muslims worldwide do indeed want to pray for peace and focus on reviving the tenets of Islam and promote peace and harmony while shunning politics and oppose those who propagate militancy. May God Bless those millions of Muslims gathered.

Prasie God, Praise Allah, Praise Jesus or praise whomever but yes Virginia, God is indeed Great!

PEACE!

Amidst bloodshed, millions of Muslims pray for peace - CNN.com

TONGI, Bangladesh (AP) -- Some 3 million Muslims put aside their country's violent struggle with political corruption and Islamic extremists and raised their hands in prayer for global peace at one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

The final prayer Sunday capped a three-day Islamic gathering on the sandy banks of the River Turag in a small industrial town just north of Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital.

Pilgrims, many of whom left work early to join the prayer, streamed into the site stretching 190 acres along both banks of the river. As the crowd overflowed the space, people arrived at the site on packed boats or climbed onto the rooftops of nearby buildings. (Watch a huge crowd gather to pray )

The annual gathering shuns politics, which have become increasingly bloody in Bangladesh, and focuses on reviving the tenets of Islam and promoting peace and harmony.

Participants discuss the Quran, Islam's holy book, pray, and listen to sermons by Islamic scholars from around the world...

I guess it would depend on what your definition of 'peace' is.

To a westener 'peace' means we all get along, live and let live, under a secular rule of law.

To Islam 'peace' will only come with the extension of the Dar al-Islam – or 'House of Islam' being accepted as the one true religion to the entire world.

Are you surprised that they pray for 'peace'?

Women sure get left out though, don't they?

Female Muslims, with the exception of high-ranking officials, were not allowed to attend, but hundreds gathered in nearby villages to take part in the event.

To most anyone, irregardless of their religion, 'peace' means we all get along, live and let live', I'll personally guarantee that. Christianity is no different than Islam, read the Bible and you will discover that non-believers will all go to Hell, period, no if's, ands, and doubt about it pal!

Most rational people, worldwide, , pray for peace my friend, if you have children and a family to support that is all that matters to most, religion comes second in any faith allthough people will not openly admit that fact.

As for women, wasn't it just a few years ago that women got the right to vote here in our own country? Of course it was, and it was only a few years ago that women were considered "equal" here in America, great strides for such a 'civilized' nation, wouldn't you agree?

It took a long time to overcome our own conservative religious zeolots here but we did it, so give the Muslims and Islam time to overthrow their own r-wing extremist nuts.

Very nice post, I absolutely agree.

You also have to remember that Bang. has been dealing with terrorists for a couple of decades now. Most Bang. muslims are fed up with the violence and want peace. You see, Bang. is a nation that is mostly Muslim, but with a large Hindu population as well. The gov't has been under a huge amount of pressure from Islamic extremist to enact Sharia law and make the Hindus 2nd class citizens. This pressure has created a lot of strife between the two parties and the Hindus have started taking a page from the Islamic terrorist play book and starting thier own attacks. The Bang. Muslims are doing nothing more than praying for the same peace that is denied people living in countries where terrorism by muslims is the modus operandi. So while it's a good thing that they are looking for peace, keep in mind that the motivation here is due to the fact that the shoe is on the other foot in Bang. and it's the Bangladeshi Muslims who are being attacked.

Good deal. Thats a start for bang. Now for the rest of Islam. This needs to be done around the world each and every week...............;)

I do have to wonder if this will last like the peace deals the hamas make... I guess we shall see....

Its still retarded not to allow women...

One important aspect to remember is the diffrent interest of reporting things. This goes for muslims as everything else.

If you got 10000 muslims rioting for some "crazy thing" and destroying things and maybee even cause deaths then it's a intersting thing to report. If you have 10000 muslims having a peacfull demonstration then it's not of the same interest.

The same goes for any group you can take enviromaltalist as example like if you had 1000 people in seatle rioting and destroying things then it's much more intersting to report then 10000 peacfull eniromaltalist demonstrating in Salt Lake City.

That's why it's take alot of more people to get a report out of a peacful demonstration for peace then a report about a violent riot and there by easily get a scewed wiev of groups of people you don't have personell knowledge about. Like if 50000 Bangladesh had participat in a violent demonstration I bet it had gotten more cover then this one.

Sorry, but a personal guarantee from you doesn’t hold much weight as far as I’m concerned. Maybe you should read the Bible. Christianity is different from Islam as is Hinduism.

“The gathering shuns politics and focuses on reviving the tenets of Islam and promoting peace and harmony. Participants discuss the Quran, Islam's holy book, pray, and listen to sermons by Islamic scholars from around the world.”

It would be nice to take this completely on face value and be a gullible dupe but can you give some examples as to who the Islamic scholars from around the world were and any content of their sermons?

I see Khaleda Zia was there.

Since Khaleeda Zia came to power on 1 October 2001 in Bangladesh, her fundamentalist political allies have launched a terror campaign against Hindus and other minorities. Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JeIB) and Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) have murdered Hindus, raped their women, poisoned their ponds, destroyed their temples, homes and standing crops, demanded Jaziya, and warned them to convert to Islam or flee Bangladesh.

“As for women, wasn't it just a few years ago that women got the right to vote here in our own country? “

Just a few years ago? How about 87 years ago. More than just a few, wouldn’t you say? You must be thinking of Kuwait that just gave women that right in 2005. The U.S. may have not been the first country to grant that right to women but we sure weren’t the last. Perhaps you would enjoy looking at a timeline about it:

‘It took a long time to overcome our own conservative religious zeolots here but we did it, so give the Muslims and Islam time to overthrow their own r-wing extremist nuts.’

Well, let’s see……..from your article:

“The annual World Congregation of Muslims, or Bishwa Ijtema, has been held each year since 1966 on the banks of the River Turag “

That’s 41 years and hatred by Islam towards Hindus in Bangladesh has gotten progressively worse. I don’t think their ‘peace prayers’ are working well for the Hindu population which was 30% in 1947 and is 10% today.

“The report specifically denounces Bangladesh for a long-history of anti-Hindu atrocities that have recently spiked following the ascent of the Bangladeshi National Party-Jamat-e-Islami coalition. The decline of Hindus in Bangladesh from 30% of the population in 1947, to less than 10% today is analyzed in the report. The report alleges that the estimated loss of 20 million Bangladeshi Hindus is a consequence of an ongoing genocide and forced exodus.”

Speaking of reading the bible, your attitude towards America reminds me of the two mothers that went before King Solomon whereas, one who’s baby had died, tried to steal a living baby from another mother. You, of course, resemble the thief mother who would rather see the baby chopped in half and dead because of jealousy and hatred.

Ignorance is indeed bliss with you, of that anyone can clearly see. You focus on the extreme radicals who cause chaos and clearly ignore the 3 million Muslims praying for peace.

Christianity is NO different than Islam nor Hinduism, just a different God, different day, that's all, who indeed knows who the true God is?, I don't and neither do you my friend, no one knows until we die and then we the living still do not know.

As you know, there are many religious conservative-Americans who still hate women's rights, who still hate the idea of women being "equal", femi-Nazi's I think they still call them among other derogartory names.

Of course, you know who they are and you know who you are my friend.

Really? Did you take a poll?

“You focus on the extreme radicals who cause chaos and clearly ignore the 3 million Muslims praying for peace.”

If I am so blissfully ignorant what do you call yourself for taking this article at face value without (as I asked you for) a list of who the speakers were?

I find it quite odd that you claim I am blissfully ignorant, yet you don’t even know the differences between Christianity, Hinduism (ever heard of the word polytheistic?) and Islam.

“As you know, there are many religious conservative-Americans who still hate women's rights, who still hate the idea of women being "equal", femi-Nazi's I think they still call them among other derogartory names.”

There are lots of hyphenated-Americans out there who hate a lot of things about a lot of people. Hating “an idea of something” and taking “action based on your hate for something” are two different things. And, as you also know, there are many non-religious (so called FUTK (freedom, understanding, tolerance, kindness) love bead and daisy toting) liberal-Americans who hate conservative-Americans and call them Neo-Cons among other derogatory names. So your point is…………..?
