"Based on 2,153 interviews, Friday's poll results suggest a strong potential for a third-party candidate - like Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party or Jill Stein of the Green Party - to take enough of the vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election to influence its outcome.According to the July 1-8 poll, 21 percent of likely voters will not back Trump or Clinton. That compares with about 13 percent of likely voters who opted out of the two main choices at the same point in the 2012 race between incumbent President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
The poll also showed a majority of American voters have an overall "unfavorable" view of both main candidates, with 46 percent of Clinton supporters and 47 percent of Trump supporters saying their top priority when voting will be to stop the opposing candidate from reaching the White House."

Since it looks like a Democrat will be running representing both the Democrat Party and the Republican Party I'm assuming the country will have another four years of a push to destruction. My hope is the "winning" candidate will get less than forty percent of the vote.

I will never again vote for a liberal and I will never be conned into voting for the lesser of two evils. Give me someone who cares about our country to vote for.

I agree, there has never been a greater need for a third party. But I think that candidates like Johnson need to show America what a leader is. Make some noise, draw some attention, get a conversation going. C'mon, the average American has never even heard of Johnson, and sitting back and letting things happen doesn't instill much confidence in me.
Chances are, I'll be voting for a 3rd party or just vote on local issues. But c'mon Gary, hop to it.

I hope everyone votes but not for the Clinton/Trump ticket. If you don't vote, then one of the defectives can have more than half the vote. If more Americans vote for a third-party candidate it can have some meaning. Wouldn't a 34, 33, 33 split be beautiful. I can see Trump or Clinton being the 34 and saying, "I have a mandate from the American people" and the Trumpkins or Clintonistas cheering while Americans feel the anger growing.

If we had that sort of split we might see something interesting from the Electoral College.

I agree, but I must insist that my vote must be earned.

Sorry, third party candidates often affect elections; but no third party candidate has ever won a Presidential election, nor is one likely to do so this time around.

The strongest showing for a third-party candidate came in 1912, when former President Teddy Roosevelt left the Republican Party. He ended up coming in second, with 27.4 percent of the popular vote and 88 electoral votes. It's generally agreed that Roosevelt's 1912 candidacy took votes away from the Republican candidate, incumbent President William Howard Taft, allowing Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win with just 41.8 percent of the popular vote.

A few third-party or independent candidates have been elected to Congress over the years. Third-party candidates rarely win elections, but they can split parties. That can effect the outcome of an election when a third-party candidate is especially strong, or when the race between the two other candidates is especially close.

That's all that is likely to happen in this election regarding either of those two candidates. What is highly likely is that they will split party votes causing whichever major party candidate who lost those votes to lose.

they hadn't here in Canada either until people were so completely fed up that they voted out both parties

nothing changed and the world still turns

JOhnson, who's Johnson...I finally saw him speak this past week

if I were American, he would be my man

It's fairly obvious that Clinton is a Trump plant. I mean, this is the most blatant and in-your-face example of an election being bought by wealthy interests (Trump) to put into office a candidate that will commit to political favors owed to the donor-in-question. Trump donated to the Clinton Foundation, Hillary's Senate campaign, and other Democrats as well. He also received a phone call from Billybob a week before launching his Presidential campaign.

Spending patterns also indicate Trump is deliberately sabotaging his own campaign (do I even need to mention his almost daily flipflops, off-the-cuff racist and authoritarian remarks?)...

It is the way democracy works and considering the main parties' candidates, it could hardly be more understandable, if a third party gained weight.
That does not mean that a three party system doesn't have its own dynamics and frustrations.

I think you meant Trump is a Clinton plant, i.e. a false candidate to allow her an easy election.

I'm not ready to buy that yet, mostly because anyone who has known about Trump before this campaign also knows that he has always been afflicted with a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease.

Basically, he talks off the cuff almost all the time, just like any Joe Schmoe around an office cooler or other informal gathering based entirely on what he thinks he knows about a subject.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again; when he entered the contest I don't think he believe he had a chance in hell...he just wanted to get some free press in the public eye. That he was as surprised as anyone at the success of his earthy conversation methods, and he is sticking to them because he thinks it's a winning combination.

I dunno man, that phone-call he got from Bill, and his in-general disregard for the poor and working citizenry of this country (not to mention his American supremacist attitude) has me really concerned about Trump. He strikes me as a big fat spoiled baby that probably got bullied a lot and was always pampered and spoiled-rotten by uber-rich parents (not unlike Hillary herself).

Gary Johnson seems like a nice guy, but the messaging from them doesn't seem serious to me.

I think the Libertarians are the closest thing to my stance that is available. Johnson doesn't seem to be intense and revolutionary which is what a successful revolutionary must be. He seems to be saying that we need to trust him that he's a Libertarian, but it's not too different and not too dangerous.

This is hogwash. Libertarians, by definition, assert the need for a fundamental change away from the Socialism that we driving toward at 100 MPH.

The Dems and the Reps are only the two sides of the same coin. They change and actually trade positions all the time. Ridiculous.

You can count me among the group that wants an alternative from the a choice between identical twins.

One of the candidates running for president in this election is a rich liberal from New York.

If you can tell from that description which candidate I am referencing, you must claim to be a mind reader as well.

Code1211: "One of the candidates running for president in this election is a rich liberal from New York."

You could have expanded. One candidate has been a lifelong Democrat. One candidate is in favor of National Healthcare. One candidate is in favor of gun control. One candidate will do absolutely anything for a few bucks. One candidate supports raising the federal minimum wage. One candidate is on record as an unrepentant liar. One candidate wants to raise taxes. One candidate thinks "little people" exist only to serve the elites. One of the candidates thinks there is no such thing as "too greedy".

I will not vote for a liberal. I can vote for Gov. Johnson but I don't expect him to win and so far he's not even running. Sitting on the curb with a sign that says vote for me doesn't get it. Voting for a loser is preferable to voting for someone who will destroy America.

Donald Trump says he knows the Mexican government is rounding up criminals and sending them north because, like his friend, Sen. Harry Reid, he has anonymous informants. Well, so do I and one called me just last night and said that Trump has already told his friend Vladimir Putin that if he wins he'll sublet the White House to the Russians for an embassy and Trump will rename Trump Plaza to Trump White House.
