American women will be able to obtain abortions in Canada if the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade and returns abortion law to the state level, says Karina Gould, minister of families, children and social development.

In an interview with CBC News Network's Power & Politics on Tuesday, Gould was asked if American women would be allowed to access the procedure in Canada.

"I don't see why we would not," she told host Vassy Kapelos. "If they, people, come here and need access, certainly, you know, that's a service that would be provided."

Gould's remarks came after U.S. political news outlet Politico published a copy of an initial draft opinion written by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, a Republican appointee. That opinion suggests a majority of justices are prepared to overrule Roe v. Wade — the landmark decision that allowed legal abortions in the U.S. — and return the issue to state legislatures.

Well there you go. Problem solved. Pro-choicers can go abort their babies in Canada.

....or in any other state of the union that would legally allow it.

You think poor women can afford to go to Canada?

Why is that anyones problem but theirs? Isn’t pro-choice about minding your own business and letting the chips fall where they may?

Where do you think that the wealthy went before Roe came, to other countries to get their abortions. THe problem is, states are trying to pass laws that allow theem to punish those who go somewhere else to get abortions. Do not know if tht is actually constitutional, but with this present court, who knows.

Yes, the ability to go to Canada will solve the problem of people who cannot afford to raise a baby being forced to have one, then be abandoned by the bearers of false witness who feign interest the sanctity of life.

Brilliant stuff. The laws of physics do allow them to exist in Canada even if they can't afford get there, so problem solved because MAGA.

Brilliant!

Can someone explain to this poster how impressively stupid it is to try turning something about bodily autonomy into "minding your own business"?

The most hamfisted attempt at reframing I've seen...

Frankly, I could care less that women can go to Canada for abortion services. Has nothing to do with anything.

The question at issue is whether states should have the power to remove from a woman the right to choose for herself and for the fetus in her womb either a safe Abortion or carrying the fetus in her womb to term. That is it. Everything else is claptrap and BULLSHIT.

82% of all pregnancies across all age groups and all conditions, rape, incest, heath of the mother or health of the fetus are carried to term. 9 out of 10 Abortions are now done early in the gestation period. If I were those just absolutely obsessed with this issue of taking away a woman's choice I would simply declare victory and GO HOME. But no.....removing choice from women has been the Holy Grail of the loony tunes Right since 1973 when Roe v Wade was decided. Holy Grails are often simply wrong headed wild eyed madness. The Holy Grail for Nazi Germany was the extermination of all European Jews. That was another good one.

Hey, that’s the message of pro-choicers so take your own advice.

You think poor women can afford to go to Canada?
You think the cabal of filty-rich democrat congresswomen won't pony up and spend the fraction of their millions necessary to get them there? Or that a virtual plethora of other options might also be available?

C'mon - I thought you people were "pro-choice" - and yet, you don't seem to see any choices out there save the one - which if you think about it, means you're not pro-choice at all.

Completely ignoring that the current 1st draft of the SC Mississippi opinion strikes at the heart of the implicit right to privacy which virtually everything else regarding sex, pregnancy, contraception etc etc etc is based upon. All it will take is somebody bringing a case against the others. How likely is that in the most litigious country in the world? If a case like that gets to the SC, the court will not be able to to unwrap the damage they will have done in this decision.

The Roberts Court is already trading away buckets of Integrity and the faith of the American People. The only real relevance the SC has is based on our confidence in their Integrity.

This particular SC is well on the way to destroying all of that. Once gone, it will take untold years if not decades to gain it back again. Not like anybody looking to take the awayright of choice between a safe Abortion and carrying to term for each individual woman making a State the arbiter matters to them one bit. Who care about the continued repression of women when the Right is right on the doorstep of their Holy Grail. In fact, isn't the continued repression of women just a side benefit? Who the hell do women think they are anyway!!!!

Completely ignoring that the current 1st draft of the SC Mississippi opinion... < snipped for relevance >
Not ignoring it - I'm completely dismissing it as totally irrelevant to my post.

They won't need to. If the states become involved in individual state abortion laws we'll have abortion friendly states women can go to anytime. Nothing will really change.

What pro choice people want more than anything is the moral backing Roe vs Wade gives them.

Traveling to Canada or another state will question the moral and ethical ground they stand on, that's a good thing.

But if theyre coming from Texas they can be sued when they go home.

While there are no laws barring women in Canada from having an abortion, it's also not considered an enshrined right in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as it has been in the U.S. Constitution since their top court's 1973 ruling. No Supreme Court in Canada has ever said in a majority decision that a woman has the constitutional right to an abortion.

In Canada, abortion is legal, but it has not yet been ruled to be a "charter right."

In the US, if Roe v Wade is repealed, then the US and Canada would be on the same footing constitutionally. Only in the US, it appears that in some states, the people would democratically choose to restrict abortions.

Come kill your babies in Canada!

They could start a marketing/tourism campaign.

Dont worry...you can still kill your babies in plenty of blue states in the US. IF RvW is defeated.

Old flaccid men in the US have unleashed a hell storm.

AKA "Abortion is legal for people who have the money."

Are you pro-life? Is this what you wanted?

Abortion Tourism will be a booming business.

You think poor women can afford to go to Canada?
They should keep their legs shut if they are unprepared for motherhood.

If that answer is good enough for men it's good enough for women too

In Canada abortion is considered an approved medical procedure. It is neither legal nor illegal, it's a medical procedure like any other medical procedure subject to approved standards and procedures. There is no need to add abortion to the Charter anymore than there is to add hysterectomy.

True, they could always do that, but it is highly unlikely that all our states will be banning abortion. Maybe late term, partial birth abortions, but it is highly unlikely that abortion will not be offered in most states.

Given the number of state who already do, or will have laws on the books outlawing abortion- yea I think a lot will change. Probably be illegal or significantly restricted in the tri state area near me Ohio, Indiana Kentucky.
