An American citizen has been arrested in Moscow on charges of espionage. Could this be Putin's retribution for Maria Butina's arrest?

Moscow -- Russia's domestic security agency says it has arrested a U.S. citizen on espionage charges. The Federal Security Service, or FSB, the top KGB successor agency, said that the American man detained in Moscow on Friday.

The agency said in Monday's statement that he was caught "during an espionage operation," but didn't give any details. The state Tass news agency identified the detained man as Paul Whelan. Spying charges carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years in Russia.

Could Maria Butina's arrest be retribution for the election meddling of Russia in 2016 (and 2018)?

And this worries you because?

Maybe he was a legit spy, but probably it's retaliation, and the "espionage" was taking a photograph of St Basil’s Cathedral.

This is going to happen more and more often now, and America is the one who started it....this modern practice of using national courts to go after international advisories.

It was always a bad idea.

You aren't worried at all that an American citizen is being imprisoned out of retribution? You aren't worried even a little bit that Putin is a monster and Trump is his puppet? Okay then, be happy in your ignorance.

Worries enuff to post.

That's an interesting projection. Apparently for you making posts is an expression of anxiety. Why are you worried?

Would it not be more of retribution if the arrest happened 2 years ago?

Puppet.

This is why you will never have any relevance on here in regards to any honest discourse.

Hyperbole.

I expect countries have eyes on probable or known spies all the time. Such an action could be political and yet legitimate.

The person not being a spy would be 'man bites dog'. But it's probably 'dog bites man'.

Occam's = spy.

I bet ours doesn't flip.

Yes. The USA does not spy on other countries. We also take our vitamins daily, say our prayers promptly before bedtime, and never say curse words.

Strange to see Republican "Americans" immediately condemn America and defend Russia.

You must be reading a different thread then me. Could you post a link to where Republicans are doing that.

Well no, the retribution would hypothetically be for the arrest of Maria Butina which only happened 4 months ago.

Now you're just being ridiculous. Nobody is naive enough not to understand that we do a lot of spying as well. But if Russia arrested and imprisoned just an ordinary American citizen out of retribution, that's a whole different thing. For one thing it says that American citizens aren't safe traveling to Russia for one thing.

They all ascribe to the "WWTD" philosophy of life: "What Would Trump Do?"

Oh.... my feelings are really hurt now....

Regardless of the validity of the charges, Mr. Whelan will end up being swapped for Ms. Butina (and the removal of a sanction to be named later).
