American Airlines will lay off 19,000 workers if it doesn't get additional federal help

The "lots of room" on the 777 is reserved for first class and maybe business. The rest of the passengers are jammed together in a long, claustrophobic tube with thin oxygen - yep, don't wanna waste any precious fuel so the jet keeps that to a minimum - and to top it off, it's really cold. Now I stopped flying after the first forced x-ray and the pat down. I know what those wonderful NSA contractors make, and they do ridiculously well - 2 to 3 hundred grand a year and more - to supposedly keep the country safe. As far as I'm concerned, they aren't doing their job if Americans are supposed to be lined up and examined like assembly line vegetables before being parked in the cans they're stuffed into. No thanks. We have a bloated government that doesn't do its job, and airlines that have steadily gone from delightful to mercenary, exploitive money mongers, to the point of shocking. Remember the poor doctor that was literally assaulted because he had the audacity to want to sit in a seat he paid for?? That was United. Fly the friendly skies?? LOL!! Personally, I don't care of all of them save maybe Frontier or Southwest hit the skids. Thanks!!

The facts are, passengers will always fly where it costs the least, then they will whine endlessly about it. There have been several airlines that started up offering bigger seats or all first class, they are all gone now. You yearn for the days of big empty planes that waste fuel, well, those are gone, too much competition. Airlines are not going to fly you on money losing jets and give you a giant seat, because the passengers have proved that they aren't willing to pay for it. That poor doctor was assaulted by a security guy, not the airline. And the airline was a commuter airline that flew for United, not actually United. Frontier? Really? One of the lowest budget airlines in the country (along with Spirit and Allegiant), they have one of the worst customer service records of all.

Everybody wants a deal, and smart businesses are looking ahead. The stock market wouldn't be where it is today if everybody thought Covid would last. A year is nothing. These sniveling big businesses that want fed money are just playing games. They know darn well that Covid is waining and they don't have much longer to sit it out. They just want easy money, and to make average workers pay. Sorry, no sympathy. Thanks!!

Every airline has surplus airplanes they wont need for possibly years to come. They're not going to buy up additional airplanes right now. Selling airframes for petty cash just isn't an option, nobody is buying them. Smart businesses don't spend hundreds of millions of dollars on assets that are going to sit in a boneyard sucking up money for years.

You can prove your own claim. There are numerous planes of any make/model available, right now. Why isn't anyone buying them? Have you considered the possibility that you're wrong, that it's not actually smart to buy a useless airliner right now?

Furthermore, selling the airframe doesn't help the original problem here. It doesn't become profitable to have employees sit on their ass just because you happen to have the cash. A smart business is going to lay off those 19,000 people either way. You are under the wildly-mistaken impression that multi-billion dollar companies would sacrifice their profits for altruistic reasons.

Heh, Frontier flew nonstop to little places. It made it bearable. But that was awhile ago when the flight attendants were nice and pilots were seasoned instead of the newbie cheaper folks that just got out of the military so heartlessly fly into turbulence because it's more "direct." In all seriousness, commercial flying has been horrible as of the last fifteen years. Now, if I can't drive or sail or charter, I ain't going there. Frankly, airlines were doing pretty well back there before the greed fest mergers. So, like it or not, there's more to the story than "losing money" on half empty jets. I hope they're all empty now because they deserve it. And btw, the doctor was ordered off the plane by UNITED, who felt like giving his fully paid seat to somebody else, as if he were a nothing. So, even though it cost him a mugging, I hope the fellow is retired and living very well on what that repugnant airline had to pay out. Thanks!!

Listen, you don't know much about the airline industry. You're running into the Dunning-Kruger problem.

Is the senate still on recess?

American Airlines says it will lay off or involuntarily furlough 19,000 employees as of October 1 unless the airline industry gets more help from Congress.

The world's largest airline, which had 133,700 employees heading into this year, says it will need to reduce headcount by "at least" 40,000 employees. It said that 12,500 had agreed to leave the company with early retirement or buyout packages, and another 11,000 had agreed to voluntary furloughs for October.
"Even with those sacrifices, approximately 19,000 of our team members will be involuntarily furloughed or separated from the company on October 1, unless there is an extension of the [federal help]," said the letter that American CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom sent to employees. American said layoff notices were sent out Tuesday to 17,500 employees

So american airlines it appears believes in socialism? And guess what, the republicans in congress are more than willing to give it to this free market company and defend the action while they try to kill the affordable care act, cut payroll taxes that pay into social security and medicare. Wake up republicans, you are being taken to the cleaners by your lying leadership. You probably work in a right to work state to boot.

I travel a lot on business and, like millions of others, I got tired of the lineups, the poor and unfriendly service, and the crowded and uncomfortable seats. I have no sympathy for any of them.

Capitalism at its finest. It's all about profit.

Different Frontier....long ago Frontier. Now they are a completely different airline.

Dr. Dao was flying United Express, operated by Republic Airlines.

Covid will be under control next year. Again, look at the stock market. War - both within and foreign - is far more of a threat, and is the wild card with regard to economic stability. Sadly, no matter who is elected, we can look forward to a violent aftermath. How long it lasts and its impact will depend on the judgment and backbone of our elected officials. Thanks!!

...and that statement is based upon what exactly? Wishful thinking or good ole conservative denial of science and misapplication of faith?

The 1918 pandemic came in three waves over two years, killing 50 million people world-wide and nearly 700K in the US. No vaccine was ever developed.

1918 Pandemic (H1N1 virus) | Pandemic Influenza (Flu) | CDC

We are in, what appears to be, the late stages of the first wave of this one. There is no real reason, that I know of, to think it will be "under control" next year given how poorly we were at even getting ahead of the first wave.

The travel and entertainment industries, where people gather, are going to be devastated by the 1st wave. It is unclear the extent the carnage of the first wave will face further devastation or when it can start INCHING its way back to health.

Interesting that you are optimistic about something that is deadly and real, yet offer this gloom and doom about violence after elections. Where does this "violent aftermath" idea come from? You must be loads of fun to spend time with at cocktail parties. I practice my distancing, thank you.

Service and a smile is free. Costumers would be willing to have more narrow seats at a good price if they were treated with respect during the process.

Here: take a look, and this is back in April. Access Denied All of these companies are in human trial. Do you honestly think a vaccine isn't around the corner?? Russia is starting inoculations in October, and even if the Kremlin is rushing things, these pharmaceuticals aren't. What's a little different is that distribution will be fast tracked in the US and elsewhere. 1918 was a long time ago. This time next year, Covid will be well under control. The travel industry will be on the upswing.

As far as violence after the election, do you really think all the vitriol is just going to end?? You've been privy to the news, right?? The rioters now think they've set a precedent, and with enough numbers can steal and destroy as a violent mob, and believe they can do it with impunity. And to a certain degree they're right. I am convinced now that barring something out of left field Trump is going to win as the Democrats are foolishly misplaying their hand. As a consequence, the rioters will try to use the election results to intimidate and rampage their way into wealth and power. Obviously, the election results will bolster the right's position, and violent confrontations will ensue. And yeah, I am fun at cocktail parties but people don't seem to have them much anymore. Thanks!!

The riots will stop when actual efforts to deal with the injustice occur. Not before.

The riots have nothing to do with injustice. It's just an excuse. These aren't "nice" folks that are stealing and destroying property. Whatever their motive, it's not racism. But I hand it to em. They've used that ploy effectively. In truth it's a rebellion against law and order which requires authority. Without law and order they can run rampant and steal and intimidate their way into their own brand of power. I think it's more an economic motive. Racism is a meme. Police are a targets because they are easily confronted as they are the front line. Unlike the Democratic elite who are shielded - but very much like Portland's dear mayor who found out the hard way what sociopaths really are - these miscreants are gathering steam and marching against average folks. And for all that want to forgive them or "understand" them, I think you should give it pause. These people would just as soon be at your doorstep, just as they were that woefully naive mayor. Thanks!!

Whatever makes you feel better about yourself. Keep ignoring the injustice because "bad people" exist.
