US sets restrictions on China's biggest chipmaker, citing military fears

US wariness of Chinese tech firms was underlined again Friday, when the Commerce Department sent a letter to companies in the states reportedly telling them they must get a license before exporting certain goods to China's largest chipmaker, because of concerns about military use of technology.

The Commerce Department said in the letter that exports to Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation "may pose an unacceptable risk of diversion to a military end use in the People's Republic of China," according to a Saturday report by The New York Times.

Trump is right to call out China.

What part of that is "America first"?

US Export Control and Licensing is an important aspect of National Security focusing on prevention of trade secrets and tech theft.

https://www.research.uci.edu/ref/export-controls/basics/importance.html

"Federal export controls regulate technologies that are taken or sent to other countries or imparted to foreign nationals working in the U.S. These controls are intended to protect U.S. economic interests and national security."

Of course, democrats are ignorant of that (as illustrated by your question) because Obama, Hillary, and Kerry ignored China's hacking and technology thefts. Biden pretends it never happens...he doesn't even address it.

That's not what your article in the OP stated.

Oh boy...you're one of those kind.

Get lost.

What happened to the idea that libertarians such as yourself opposed government regulation and should let the market decide, or does that only ap[ply when it is politically adventageous?

Gov't regulations and national security are two different things, although they may overlap at times. The protection of our nations trade secrets, technology, military designs, etc are vital to security.

The left seem willfully ignorant on this.

I'll have to dig a lot but I seem to recall an attempt to do something similar getting blown up by McConnell during the Obama administration. I guess now that Trump's in charge, Mitch is feeling patriotic again.

Will Trump praise Xi for his handling of it, too?

The only libertarians that seem to oppose too much government are those with libertarian-left leans. The libertarian-right leans are usually pro-huge-government just so long as that government is doing what they want.

Libertarian-left seem a lot more focused on individual liberties - actual liberties - as things government shouldn't **** with, but also recognize that there are quite a few things we need government to do if America is going to be a functioning nation.

They will give money to one of Trump's friends, and the national security risk will magically be gone.
