Amazons Echo may help solve double murder

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ordered-to-disclose-echo-alexa-recordings-murder-case-2018-11
A US judge has instructed Amazon to hand over audio recordings from an Amazon Echo as evidence in a murder case.
Prosecutors believe the Echo may have evidence relating to the murders of Christine Sullivan and Jenna Pelligrini in New Hampshire in January 2017.
As the Echo records portions of conversations, the database on file may have audio of the killer or lead to identifying the murderer.

Just more proof that people are foolishly installing active eavesdropping/spy technology in their own homes when they buy into the sales hype of making life "easier."

In order for these devices to function they have to be active/on to react to commands/requests. They literally hear (and in some cases with active video, see) everything within range of their sensor array.

That data collection does not disappear, it is stored for w/e purposes and you are actually allowing the owner's of this technology an ability to freely monitor you in your homes/work spaces.

Can you imagine the possibilities? Such as law enforcement at whatever level getting a warrant to eavesdrop and using this active, already installed system to do so with no risk of discovery?

Privacy is becoming a thing of the past, and people don't even realize it.

I wonder how many people know that there are "wake up" words for which everything heard by Echo or Alexia is recorded and saved forever?

The same for nearly all new cars that have a transmitting GPS tracker and a box recording all driving activities. I don't if that "black box" records where you are driving or just how you are driving.

As well as the new cellphones, with GPS tracking advertised as a "safety measure." Even the older models "ping" when they enter and leave a tower zone so the location of your "phone" can be tracked by time and location.

Many computer and communication systems can be turned on remotely, and you can be observed/listened to without even being aware unless you notice the "light" showing your video or cellphone has been activated.

"Mr. Echo, will you please tell the court what you saw?"
"The...butler...did...it..."

An interesting story just in the last month: A senior couple were spending a few days in the home of their son as he was gone travelling. The home is in a very small town in Florida.

They were watching TV and talking when a cop knocked on the door, responding to a disturbance or some such. They opened the door for him and replied there was no disturbance, just the 2 of them, and he left.

Maybe an hour later another cop shows up at the door, same message, same answer by the couple, but this officer explained they had been called by the Alexa unit in the house. The couple had no idea, as they don't have one in their own home.

The wrong words, the wrong intonation, the wrong decibels, whatever.

Caveat Emptor.
