I am Colombian and I am very interested in american politics but I still don't choose a political party as my favorite. Although I think that I am closer to the two traditional parties and the libertarian party, I still don't like them.

I am pro-life, I get angry when someone talks about drug legalization, I support same-sex unions but not marriage and that would make me a conservative. However, I support stem cell research, euthanasia and separation of church and state, which makes me liberal.

I like capitalism, a free liberal market. I support war in Afghanistan but I think that War in Iraq was unnecesary and stupid.

I dislike the Republican Party but I can't tolerate Obama's positions on international politics and diplomacy. I have some sympathy for the Tea Party movement but I think they are too radical for me. I don't like socialism, but I recognize that a green revolution is necessary. I support research of alternative sources of energy.

I admire many chiefs of state, presidents and prime ministers that support conservative agendas, like Angela Merkel (Germany), Stephen Harper (Germany), and Sebastian Piñera (Chile) but I reject others like the British conservative party, Sarkozy or the current Mexican government.

I also like some liberals and a few social-democratic parties and governments. I like the British Liberal Democrats, the Australian labor party, the Brazilian president Lula and the Japanese government. My favorite president is Álvaro Uribe of Colombia, who has combined conservatism with liberalism in a good way.

Please tell me if I am more similar to the Democratic party, the Republican Party or the Libertarian Party, because I am VERY CONFUSED.

You are an independent plain and simple, there is no party that you share enough values with and that is actually a good thing, it means you think for yourself. The bad news in that is you are the type of voter who has the most research to do in any decision you make.

From where I sit, you sound like a moderate conservative.

You're a little bit to the right of me on some social issues, but fairly well in line with me on most everything else, and I consider myself a moderate conservative.

I think one thing you should consider is why you feel what you do about the issues. Generally (not always) US liberals and republicans tend to have their own philosophies about life in which they draw their feelings about specific issues. So, I would suggest you start from there, examine your philosophy, examine popular liberal, conservative, libertarian, etc philosophies and see where you match up there.

I agree with that. I've reversed a few of my stances over my years on this planet just by reflecting on the whys and whats involved in those things. At my core I'm still the same person, but certain positions of mine didn't work such as the drug policy in America as was mentioned among other things. Great advice Mega.

You are not democratic because of your support for a free market and right to life.

You are not libertarian because you support instances of the state that go beyond the preservation of the rights to of life, liberty and property.

You are not paleo-conservative either.

The only thing democratic about you is that you believe Iraq is all about oil.

I do not consider Bush and a majority of the republican leadership to be on the right. Looking at your positions on things, I'd say that the only reason why you dislike the Republican Party is because they lack integrity and consistency with their constituents. I'd have to know more about your reasoning for supporting social-democracy (which is anti-free market) and your opposition to the republican party. Until then, I'll have to go with LaMidRighter in believing you're independent, despite that you've espoused center-right views that many republicans hold.

What it boils down to me is that I had to decide what were the most important issues to me overall. I am socially liberal although I am conservative in my personal life. To me, the most important issue comes down to who will encourage and facilitate a strong economy the most. My reasoning behind this is that if the economy isn't sustainable enough to allow a functional society, then all the freedoms in the world don't matter. I vote first for economic and market values/reasoning, and I believe the American people as a whole are freedom-minded enough to try and keep our personal freedoms somewhat stable, although I am seeing a diminishing capacity for this as more and more become government dependents.

Separation of Church and State is a liberal ideal???

Do the rest of you agree with that?

And Jomiarias, it doesn't matter what lean you call yourself. You're not American and they will determine your lean for you regardless of what you say. I speak from experience. :)

When people specifically note their support for "the separation of church and state," I generally assume they mean something more than the minimum of what the First Amendment requires.

It's like when someone specifically points out that they support 2nd amendment rights - they usually don't just mean that they support the right to own a rifle in your house for self defense, they usually mean that they support the right to purchase and carry handguns/more powerful rifles with relatively minor regulation by the government.

From my view point, you're more Conservative then Liberal. It's actually nice to see the opinions of some outside the U.S other then the biased media. You need to post more on here.

As far as the war in Iraq; you hit the nail on the head when you wrote (i.e. " I think that War in Iraq was unnecesary and stupid."). I think most Americans feel that way, but won't often express that opinion, for fear of being seen as anti military (to the soldiers that are fighting and dying). Our Congress (Republican and Dumacrat a like) really got "eat up with the dumba$$" on that one.....of course they like to blame it on President Bush....

I declare you a political independent, a misfit, someone who both parties will hate and will try to annihilate. Good luck.

well, since you are from Colombia I would say it comes down to two things:

1. Bush supported Uribe 100% in his offensive against the FARC and negotiated a free trade agreement that our democrats killed in congress.

2. Barack Obama. ole Hugo Chavez's "amigo". supported Zeyala, and by extension, ALBA. not exactly your friend.

You are clearly a conservative, who sees the bigger picture for the most part. I would disagree with you on euthanasia, though I'm certain I would see your point of view as understandable and valid. Conservatives aren't against separation of church and state, but we don't refuse to acknowledge that our country and constitution were built and written with Christian values as a starting point. Conservatives support alternative sources of energy, too, but we don't demonize the oil industry in the process; in fact, we recognize that it will be people from the oil industry that are best suited to solve the energy issues, not a bunch of placard-waving hippies in Oregon.

I would go ideologically you would be considered a Centrist, likely a slightly right leaning one. I say this because you appear to have a variety of views that are staunchly on one side of the political aisle or the other rather than a number of relatively mild views that tend towards the middle.

Party wise, I'd likely go Independent for you.
