It's a tragic misunderstanding of human behavior based on a common misunderstanding of wolf behavior. It's the worst kind of pseudoscientific gibberish.
I use the term, but only because people understand it.
As males go, I prefer to think of myself as the Alpha and the Omega.
Speaking of Jesus Christ, remember what he did to the moneychangers in the Temple. If he snapped his fingers while the Disciples were talking, you know they'd shut the **** up.
Societal roles are not just fabricated out of thin air. They exist because people take them on. They were labeled upon observation. It's rare that we make up concepts and then enforce them.I see the term alpha male in the same light i see the gender definitions of masculine and feminine. We made that **** up, it caught on, and people try to center their lives around it. We are born to a relatively blank slate, until we become bombarded with societal roles.
recognizing patterns in behavior is not placing it into a box. The planning into boxes is normally self inflicted. We try to label everything, to understand it. As is our nature. But the more evolved we become, the less important it is to categorize everything and place everyone into a box.
To describe an architype of human behavior that absolutely exists. They didn't just make up the word and the idea to place people in a box it was to describe a behavior pattern in a form of short hand like saying something is jovial or friendly verses describing every single behavior individually. The term alpha male is just that... a term some person made up.
That's what has been happening for millennia. Sometimes people like to study behavior or characterize behavior so as to not have to write a dissertation on a person every time they refer to them.I wish we'd stop creating pointless expectations of ourselves. Lets see what could hapoen when we are allowed to unfold, naturally.
I am whatever the situation calls for.
Alpha male
Social psychology snake oil.
What is your term for it?
I posted my term in #32.

It’s been my experience that when a group of men/males get together, there is an obvious pecking order that shows after a very short period of time. Not always the loudest/biggest/most obvious rises to the top.
I think I experienced that in grade school....but "Alpha adolescent" just does not have the same ring to it.
I generally dont subscribe to Alpha male thing; I think its more of a social buzzword to make some males feel better about themselves.
I think leadership outside of most societal norms is whoever has the biggest fist or stick.
I don’t necessarily agree with the term “alpha male.” I get the impression that you are prior service and are now engaged as a contractor in a similar role. The military is mostly a male dominated group. Even in the RW there stark differences in the interaction of gender specific groups. Females that I have discussed this with tend to agree. What do you mean “outside of societal norms?”
Perhaps I should have phrased it differently..."Western societal norms?"...I see it here, and in many other regions I have been that the "Alpha male" is simply whomever has the most guns or inspires the most fear; I am inclined to label that more along the lines of bully but even that word does not seem to fit correctly.
However, yes, I am prior military, and currently do contract work overseas....but I dont know how that really factors in, as I have worked under females as well regardless of whatever personality traits they did or did not possess.
Those are duty positions.
Social psychology snake oil.
Be your own Alpha.
Be your own Alpha.
Yup. I would describe an Alpha male as someone who lives life on his own terms and does not change his objectives to suit someone else's desires.
You digress. Alpha people.
I choose NOT to use gender neutral speech.
What are people's thoughts on "alpha males"? What is your definition of what an alpha male should be? Or maybe you don't even acknowledge this term and think it's a dumb PUA concept? Do you consider yourself an alpha male (if you are a guy)? Or have you been with an alpha male if you are a girl. Lets share our thoughts.
To me, a true alpha male should be kind and compassionate. It's a nice bonus if they are confident and charismatic, but these things are not absolutely necessary.
Alpha males come in all shapes. For example, Jesus, according to some people, he would be classified as a beta, but just look at how much he was and still is being revered by so many people. He was a leader in every way. To me, he was alpha, and I am not even Christian.
We humans are animals, which is why we entertain the concept of an "alpha male", but we are also more than just animals, and this is why our true ideal of alpha males cannot be extrapolated from what we see in the animal kingdom.
