A group of up to 145 pilot whales have died after becoming stranded on a beach on Stewart Island in New Zealand.

The animals were discovered by walkers late on Saturday, strewn along the beach of Mason Bay.

Authorities said half the whales had already died by then, while the other half were put down as it would have been too difficult to save them.

In separate incidents, 10 pygmy whales and a sperm whale were also beached in New Zealand over the weekend.
=========================================
One could say that the chemical industry killed all these animals as one whale had 115 plastic cups in its stomach.

'whale strandings are not uncommon in New Zealand and that there are about 85 incidents a year. In most cases though, it's just a single animal that is beached, not a whole pod.'

Whales dying because of plastic cup poisoning should not be a topic for levity.

What an idiotic message. The whales didn't strand themselves because of plastic cups.

Exorbitantly powerful underwater "sonar" by the military drives mammals insane and this is not a new problem. However, that may not be the reason. Whales have been stranding themselves as far back as recorded history and long before plastic or sonar.

I know, no joke, they could’ve rendered those things down for some renewable clean burning lamp oil

And did they recycle the plastic?

The obvious answer is to remove the New Zealand landmass so whales can't get stranded there anymore.

How sad. And right after the discovery of the sea turtles.

September of last year about 400 whales stranded on a New Zealand beach.

In February 2015, 200 whales stranded on Farewell Spit, NZ.

In 1985, about 450 whales stranded in Auckland.

And back in 1918, roughly 1,000 wales stranded at Chatham Islands.

As sad as it is, it is absolutely nothing unusual for NZ.
