The G7 nations announced on Friday they were revoking Russia's "most favoured nation" (MFN) status, clearing the way for them to hit Russian imports with higher tariffs than applied to other WTO partners or to ban certain Russian goods entirely.

European Commission vice-president Dombrovskis said in a statement that Albania, Australia, Iceland, Moldova, Montenegro, New Zealand, North Macedonia and South Korea would also stop according Russia MFN status.

The more the merrier! (y)

Putin might be able to win the conflict he's created in ukraine but in doing so he has lost all credibility with most of the rest of the world and he and his citizens will suffer for it.

Afghanistan went a long way towards helping the Soviet collapse. This might ultimately be a fatal mistake for Putin; an evil stormfront's silver lining

I think the longer he continues his war, the worse it will get for him and just might remove him from power?

I certainly hope so. But 80 years of paranoid and bloodthirsty totalitarianism mixed with a socialist economy has resulted in an awful lot of Russians who do everything in their power to avoid anything "political" aka what the government is doing, and a huge other bunch that digests/repeats the propaganda because that's safest for their family. Russia has a well-oiled suppressive apparatus.

Are they able to rise up? Willing? 🤷

I guess we'll see. But unless everything we've heard is counter-propaganda, Russia has a deeply insulted and demoralized army stretched thin in a country of people whose souls it lit on fire. Pyrrhus is holding a phone. I wonder how many digits he has dialed thus far.

You can’t suppress economic reality for very long, It appears that DPRK may be a rare exception, but that is with loads of Chinese help.

Which Russia is now begging for. What it gets remains to be seen.

Hey may very well have buried himself with this, and expansionist Russia with it. That place has eaten itself alive for a century. But we may also end up faced off against a more explicit Russia-China-satellite alliance, and end up getting back to our Cold War shit trying to recruit allies around the world.

Nothing to do but place the most rational bets possible, and plan.

It was fairly painless for the US to do without trading with Russia, but the US is heavily dependent on trade with China.

Exactly.

We could still crush China economically, but there's no way to do it at this point without crushing ourselves. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing given what trading with China has done for us in the last several decades; more of a trade-off. But it means we only have so much credibility threatening China to get it to not rescue Russia financially.

Geopolitics. 🤷

I'm guessing this ends with China-Russia having more than a marriage of convenience, but it would be wonderful if it ended with China telling Russia that its recklessness is too much for an ally.

IMHO, China will take what they can from Russia. It is much more likely that if (when?) Russia fails that the refugees will head west and not into China.

He's not going to win this conflict.
