According to the latest statement of NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at the Munich conference, Alliance “wants to see Georgia in NATO in 2009”. Well, there is no doubt for me as well as for everyone who live in Georgia now that our integration into NATO is very profitable for Americans and their European allies especially taking into account protracted war in Iraq and Afghanistan. But what are our benefits in this case, I wonder?
I share opinion of Akaki Asatiani, who has recently stressed that “if NATO guarantees the restoration and preservation of our territorial integrity, there will be no better organization for me and for Georgia than NATO.” But now representatives of Alliance note that they can grant us only diplomatic support. That’s not at all the thing to do!
If we become allies both of us must fulfill our responsibilities. Why should we send our pals to bloody bath in Iraq while Alliance refuses to sweat over solving of our territorial problems with Abkhazia and Ossetia? If NATO really needs us as its new allies, it should help Georgia to restore its territorial integrity even by force if required. Otherwise their pink dream to see us in NATO has no sense for present Georgia at all!
