Everything thing was done to take Victor Orbán down this year. The Hungarian opposition coalesced under one umbrella so as to improve the odds of taking down this Titan. Or failing that at least deny him a super majority in Parliament. And polls leading up to today's elections suggested that Orbán the Titan would crawl through, but bruised and battered, and reduced to maybe a simple majority in Parliament.

Problem appears to be no one told the Hungarian Joe. Or maybe he wasn't listening. Or maybe the Hungarian Joe just likes Orbán's old fashion style. Orbán is uncomplicated. He calls a spade, a spade; a man, a man; a woman, a woman. None of those abstract constructs for Orbán the Titan. He also appears to think Christianity is not a four letter word. Orbán the Titan is an oddity in chic modern Europe: an unapologetic Christian. Orbán's fame reached as far as America; causing enough stir such as to cause the great Tucker Carlson to pay a pilgrimage to Buda & Pest to seek an audience with this phenomenon.

Orbán also has numerous enemies at Bruxelles. His black and white simplicity doesn't sit well there. His Christianity as well. His fondness for Vladimir Putin grates on quite a few nerves.

But I digress.

Orbán the Titan had this to say as results started pouring in:

“We won a victory so big that you can see it from the moon, and you can certainly see it from Brussels,” said Orban, who has often been condemned by the European Union for overseeing democratic backsliding and alleged corruption.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary’s nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared victory in Sunday’s national elections, claiming a mandate for a fourth term as a still incomplete vote count showed a strong lead for his right-wing party.

In a 10-minute speech to Fidesz party officials and supporters at an election night event in Budapest, Orban addressed a crowd cheering “Viktor!” and declared it was a “huge victory” for his party.

Orban is a far right strongman asshole.

LOL and the big surprise of the night was that My Homeland party gained 7 seats, at the expense of the opposition! They are the big winners of the night! Congratulations!

Orban stands with the butchers of Bucha as he stands with the ethnic cleansers from Moscow. These people will always be at war.

Orban's victory will isolate Hungary from rest of Europe even more, and with Putin's war against the Ukrainian people, Orban's former ally Poland now have ditched him, making him all alone.

To be fair, I can see how support for a dictator who commits war crimes, the torture and execution of civilians, and the raping of children could grate on quite a few nerves.

That's what happens when you ban or minimise the opposition from having airtime to put their case across. Not very hard to understand the process really.

aww is the left a victim? awww

No suprise there. The opposition has been banned from media and Orbans party is the only one that has been seen.

Exactly. Orban isn't winning a true democratic election; he's winning in an illiberal democracy, one in which he's rigged the system in his favor. I mean, technically speaking, Iran, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela all have "democracies", but they're "democracies" in which the system is easily manipulated to ensure the "correct" outcome.

I know nothing about Mr. O. except that he reportedly wants to keep Hungary Hungarian.

In blunt (but civil) language, he does not want, uh, non-Christian immigrants coming to live in Hungary.

And apparently many Hungarian people agree with him (after they have looked at the situation in England and France and Germany and Sweden).

So if Hungary is like Iran, when are democrats going to sign a nuke deal with them?

There are other ways that Orban and Fidesz rig Hungarian democracy. For instance, they can throw out or deny voter registration on grounds of 'intellectual' and 'psychosocial' disability. Candidate registrations can take place during elections, which gives Orban the power to introduce fake opposition as a ruse to divide the opposition vote, which is what he's done over and over again. He's not just taking over the press; he's taking over the political system as well. In tandem, it's very difficult to beat him and his fellow ethno-nationalists. He runs an economy based increasingly on political fealty.

Again, this is what you miss when you decide that you'd rather replace messy liberal, pluralistic democracy with 'efficient' illiberal, authoritarian democracy. What we lose is accountability. Look at what Putin has done to Russia, what Chavez/Maduro has done to Venezuela, what Erdogan has done to Turkey. There's no accountability no matter how badly they **** things up. It will likely take a violent coup to get rid of all of them. That's what liberal democracy helps people avoid: the need for violence in order to gain some accountability. Yes, democracy is messy, but it's a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

Well, Orban saying keep Hungary Hungarian means keep Hungary on the side of Putin without provoking sanction on Hungary. Saying "don't want war" means if Putin wants or desires Hungary, it is his.
Remember Hungary is part of the EU which gives Orban a very attractive position to help Russia circumstance the sanctions.

Putin was by the way the first countryleader to congratulate Orban.

If I recall correctly, Hungary is also a major consumer of Russian commodities, particularly energy.

What a stupid statement.
I'm aware democrats do stupid things. I'm just hoping they treat hungary with the same respect they've treated Iran all these years.

and the right, and the center, and any other party or person that doesn't align with his interests.
LOL and the same can't be said for....literally....anyone else in power?

He calls a spade, a spade; a man, a man; a woman, a woman. None of those abstract constructs for Orbán the Titan. He also appears to think Christianity is not a four letter word.
Yep, just a straight shooter who tells it like it is.
Orbán said "We must state that we do not want to be diverse and do not want to be mixed: we do not want our own colour, traditions and national culture to be mixed with those of others. We do not want this. We do not want that at all. We do not want to be a diverse country."[140][141]

In his 2021 speech, Orbán said “The challenge with Bosnia is how to integrate a country with 2 million Muslims”. (Source)
The report's authors write that over the past decade, "Orbán's government implemented a new cultural policy in order to advance a single nationalist narrative and define alternative viewpoints as anti-Hungarian. This has had the effect of limiting creative expression and diminishing plurality in the arts." (Source)
As the Hungarian leader steps up his embrace of anti-Semitic imagery, the country’s Jews are becoming more and more uncomfortable. András Heisler, leader of the Jewish community in Hungary, personally appealed to Orbán to end the Soros poster campaign. Orbán rejected the appeal and suggested that Hungarian Jews do more to oppose Muslim immigration to Europe. (Source)
“The Hungarian government is minimising its country’s participation in the genocide, rehabilitating war criminals, and introducing anti-Semitic writers into the national curriculum,” the Holocaust Revisionist Report noted. (Source)
Orban government has downplayed the holocaust, rewritten their history books to be more positive of Hungary's Nazi nationalist collaborators, is openly anti-semetic, openly hates Muslims, banned art he doesn't like, and has called all gay people pedophiles.

He is impossible to support....and yet here you are...supporting him.

Uhhh, yes actually. Other countries actually have governments that don't suppress opposition parties.

No, no one's oppressed in hungary. 😂 No one in hungary is a victim, no matter how many times you try to fight the victim hard into everything. The left lost fair and square. Get over it.

?
For example, certain Hungarian authors have been removed from the national school curriculum, including works by Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Imre Kertész as well as contemporary novelist Péter Esterházy, who opposes the Orbán government. According to the AFI report, works by József Nyírő and Albert Wass have been placed in their stead: "Nyírő was a member of the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and Wass was 'an avowed anti-Semite and convicted war criminal.' " (Source)
In a 2014 speech, he declared that he is constructing “an illiberal state, a non-liberal state” in Hungary. (Source)
Orbán and his party have also co-opted the fourth branch of government: the media. Orbán quickly captured the Hungarian media, placing loyalists in charge of all state-run media outlets, thereby turning them into Fidesz party mouthpieces. Other media outlets are incentivized to report stories crafted by the government’s news agency. (Source)
The party initiated a series of reforms to weaken the Constitutional Court under the guise of democracy. Today, the court can no longer rule on tax and budgetary matters, and the government can legally enact laws even that the court has deemed unconstitutional. (Source)
Fidesz ministers have packed the National Election Commission, a 10-person body tasked with ensuring election integrity, with loyalists.[46] During its reorganization, Fidesz leaders prematurely dismissed members selected by the previous government and then altered the selection rules. (Source)

And again, it isn't "the left", it is anyone and everyone who opposes his government. The leader of the opposition party was a right candidate.
An observant Catholic father of seven, Marki-Zay, 47, presented himself as the stronger of two finalists to run against Orban because he would be challenging him from the right rather than the left. His opponent, Klara Dobrev, from the left-wing Democratic Coalition congratulated him on his win. (Source)
