An Alabama city has joined North Carolina in passing a bathroom ban against transgender people. The city of Oxford unanimously passed the ordinance Tuesday criminalizing using any public restrooms that don’t correspond with a person’s gender listed on his or her birth certificate.Anyone found violating the ordinance could be face a $500 fine or up to six months in jail. The ordinance will also apply to any public changing rooms and locker rooms.Council president Steven Waits said the law was “not out of concerns for the 0.3 percent of population who identify as transgender,” but “to protect our women and children,” the Anniston Star reported.
The anti-LGBT law was pushed as a response to Target’s latest policy allowing transgender employees and shoppers to use restrooms based on their gender identity.“We believe that everyone — every team member, every guest, and every community — deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally,” Target announced on its blog.
