Move over FoxNews, MSNBC and CNN, there's a new cable news channel coming to town. Al Jazeera will soon be broadcasting it's version of international news and op-ed talk programs to english speaking audiences. This oughta be interesting. But will western audiences watch? As a news junkie and just out of sheer curiosity and a diversion from the repetititon of the other news channels, I know I will.

Al-Jazeera English Channel Set To Launch

...Al-Jazeera International will broadcast from Doha, Qatar, and from bureaus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; London; and Washington, D.C. Cable and satellite distribution deals are expected to be announced today.

Programs will include talk and feature shows and several daily newscasts featuring live reports from the four regions with "different cultural views of the day's events," says Will Stebbins, AJI's Washington bureau chief.

"There's an appetite for international news that doesn't come from a specific national perspective," he says. "We're not going to have any accent."....read

I doubt it's going to be available on American television. Advertisers would be terrified to be seen on that channel, and the cable companies probably wouldn't give it a slot.

The Qatar sheiks who own Al Jazeera have billions to support Al Jazeera whether it makes a profit or not. And I think its a done deal as far as airing on cable. Anyway, if enough people watch Al Jazeera, the advertisers will come. I bet one of their first customers will be big oil. LOL.

Anyway, the article says Al Jazeera will have a station in Washington DC and from what I heard on the radio today they seem intent on broadcasting to American audiences, as well British.

They've hired Dave Marash, a former ABC Nightline correspondent to give the news and Sir David Frost of the BBC whom I assume will do a talk interview style program.

I wonder how liberals are going to react when they realize that Al Jazeera is more conservative than foxnews.

I see this as an opportunity for Americans to understand the enemy better.

I would venture to say that most don't know Sunni from Shiite, Taliban from talcum powder or Muslim from Buddhist for that matter.

Been watching it today.. not too bad, still fine tuning. No covered women and plenty of debate. They have a lot of well known faces from other channels. Saw a weather girl from Sky News, 2 reporters from CNN, 1 from BBC, one from I think ABC nightly news... and some rather hot woman reporter covering the Dafur.. never seen her before.

I had expected much more "arab spin", but there is hardly anything I can put my finger on other than they mention arab issues more than CNN.. the one "biased" term I did see was the use of "alleged terrorist groups" when discribing the gaza rocket attacks.. granted we are not 100% sure who is shooting them (even though we can make a good guess), so I guess thats semi okay. At least they did not call Isreal a terrorist state

They have been far more balanced than Fox is on mid east issues, talking to both sides and giving them equal time. Lets see if they have offical Isreali goverment people on. They even had an exclusive interview with the projected new president of Congo and was heavliy critical of Iran. They showed "pro Isreali" footage and comments, showing the burial and scene of the rocket that killed that woman.. but of course mentioned it was the first time in 6 months that anyone died in Isreal and that 256 palestinians had been killed in Isreali retaliation. One can argue that this is biased, but thats rather thin when they are only quoting actual facts.

They also lead heavily with Darfur... showing exclusive pictures from the area, interviews and were highly critical of the international community.. not exactly "arab" friendly, or a spokesorgan of the "axis of evil".

We shall see how this channel evolves over time, but so far not too bad.

Sad part is that its only availiable via broadband in the US, as cable companies dont want to send it..... yea free speech my ***.

Interesting, but I think a 24-7 hour channel would be too much to keep viewers watching. I would think that CNN/MSNBC/FOX et al would just show an hour or so a day. I'd tune in for the highlights.

Yeah, well last time FOX tried to give both sides, their reporter was taken hostage, do try to get some balance in your own opinion sir, I do grow tired of your usual knee jerk reactions.

That said, I would love for this to be shown, sadly, it's just a water downed version I assume, they won't show the young children being taught to believe Jews are "apes and pigs" but we shall see.

Will we get to see news footage from tapes of people being beheaded from Muslim extremists as well?

More propaganda, nothing more.

Because nothing converts like beheadings. Propaganda works for you not against you . Unlike beheadings.

I already get that network....Its called CNN.........

Enter The Ignorance. Have you ever watched AJN?

Yes I have watch Al Jazeera, have you all? You keep claiming that they show beheadings and to my recollection the only beheading that they have shown part off, was of an american.. the same tape shown on several other networks including CNN. One might ask, is the bias against Al Jazeera one based on actual fact, or based on what Rumsfeldt and Co, want to you to belive, because AL Jazeera aint playing ball with them and accepting money for "positive stories" in Iraq?

It's because people think they have nothing but stories supporting terrorists and putting the troops in a bad light.

Well people should watch the channel before passing judgement. The channel had a perfect oppurtinity this week to put US troops in a bad light and did not. They are doing alot of Darfur reporting this week and being highly critical of the UN and world on this issue.

Thanks again for contributing to the debate once again with your centrist, obviously not partisan comment, NP. By the way,

Is that possible??

This AJN channel will have it's own adgenda, just like all the other news networks. That being the case, I shall treat it with the same trust I do all other news networks. None.

The only agenda I see so far is to piss off the establishment regardless of who it is.

The channel has been on air for a few days now, and thier in depth reports are frankly amazing. Both sides are heard, and very in depth. Plus the stories they cover are almost never on the other news channels. Darfur is a daily thing, sending directly from there. Going in depth in Syria, showing all sides of Syrian life (how free women are in Syria compared to other parts of the middle east) and other stories.. a mud volcano that has put 1500 people out of a home for example.

But its still early days.. and they are somewhat disrespectfull of Bush, by calling him Bush and not President Bush heh.. but wtf most people do that anyways.

Ild recomend it as well. I expected it to have a pan-arabist bias but it seams very middle of the road. It covers alot of areas and storys that arent coverd by the established media [for somewhat suspect reasons] so its a facininateing way to learn about them. Very watchable as well.

I haven't seen the new station, however, I frequent AlJazeera.com (know thy enemy) and if the new channel is anything like their online magazine then it is pure anti-American anti-Israel pro-jihadist propaganda.

You do know that aljazeera.com is NOT, I repeat NOT, the website of the TV station right? In fact aljazeera.com can be compared to right wing nut sites like newsmax.com and other totaly biased "news sources".

The right adresse is www.algazeera.NET.

The persons who owns and runs aljazeera.com or aljazeera.info are not affilated with the TV station at all.

Red Dave or Pete EU commenting on the neutrality of Al Jazeera strikes me as just as credible as if Fred Phelps or Pete Santorum were to comment on the neutrality of the 700 club.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Yes where would we be without the infalible logic of ad hominem arguments? i dont know how disscussion could function without these oh-so-constructive comments. Thank you for your "contributions"

Well why dont you make up your own mind then about Al Jazeera in English and not base it on Rumsfeldt and Co propoganda against the station?

I do doubt Al Jazeera's neutrality, but thats not based on Rumsfeldt and Co's attacks on the station, but of me living over a decade in the area and know how media in the region self censor big time and are biased as hell.

Al Jazeera might be different but at this time I dont know. I do know they are taking up stories that western media stay clear off, and are highly critical of the regimes in the area, so that alone makes me start to belive that they might actually be different.

The American hatred against Al Jazeera is based on what? That Osama sends them his propoganda crap and they send it along with everyone else? Is it that they showed a so called "beheading" of an american, the same footage that was shown on most other networks? Is it because its ARAB? You do know there are several arab news networks, all highly critical of the US, and some even more critical.. but why dont they get the same treatment?

Al Jazeera must be doing something right, when both Isreal, Palestinians, Saddam and the US are on its backs for being "biased".

What, exactly, did they show? What, exactly, is a "so-called beheading"?

What, exactly, did they show? What, exactly, is a "so-called beheading"?

Exactly what did they show? The beheading was sent over the web, so every tom dick and harry could see it, but did Al Jazeera or any other news organisation actually send the bit with the actual beheading?

Time and time again, people on this board and in the US in general, claim that Al Jazeera is the channel that show the "beheading of US citizens". Has this "so called beheading" of US citizens on Al Jazeera ever happened? I know its happened on the web, where everyone got the pictures from, but has Al Jazeera or any other major news organisation actually shown this beheading?
