Should airline pilots who choose and are sufficently trained to do so carry firearms to protect the flight deck from being taken over ny hijackers, and why?

Yes.
Its a no brainer - the guys that know how to land the plane should posses the ability to project deadly force, if necessary, to retain control of the flight deck. Passive defenses can be defeated, after which the security of the flight crew is comprimised. The pilots having the ability to kill those that would turn their aricraft into a cruise missile is of paramount importance.
