How many shut downs have we been through now, and where was this guy or anyone else telling these sorts of stories then?

See now, that there is a problem for those yelling "SAFETY!" now.

this shutdown was for 35 days thus endangering the National Security of the United States. The FAA was about to shut down the airports in New York and this is what tip the scales for Trump to open the government.

More arguments for putting the pressure on Congress to find a way to break deadlocks and get bipartisan bills on Trump's desk that he will sign or which can survive a veto by overriding it. If Congress fails again the government will likely shut down again. Get to work, Congress. Democrats have the weaker hand in political maneuvering at the moment which means they may have to move more to reach a compromise. Refusing to budge and blaming Trump for their failure to reach a successful bipartisan compromise is wrong, deceitful, and dirty.

There's no rule that Congress can only pass legislation that Trump will sign.

The argument is for GOP Senate Leader McConnell to stop blocking Senators from voting on pending legislation.

There is no rule that Trump must sign bills favored by democrats only or favored by slim majorities in Congress.

The only reason we are talking about this is the length of the previous shutdown and the probability of the next one in a few weeks. When the government is in shutdown that does not furlough tower staff, but it does impact all the support and evaluation services behind air traffic control. The issue is over a period of time the impact of a longer term government shutdown having those support services impact those who remain during shutdown. It puts our air travel at risk.

Having Sully speak about this is all about attention to the subject, but the subject itself is a valid one to discuss.

It is not the job of congress to fashion a bill that pleases the president before he or she will sign it. Congress did not cause the shutdown the president did. And if you think the democrats have the weaker hand you are mistaken. Trump has already claimed the wall will be built while congress tries to hammer out an agreement to pass on to the president to sign. That to me does not sound like negotiating with good faith. I find your post to be wrong and deceitful.

Wrong. You must be unaware of what the veto power and responsibility is for.

Congress did not cause the shutdown the president did.

Trump did not shut off funding to the government. Congress failed to keep the funds flowing.

And if you think the democrats have the weaker hand you are mistaken.

Democrats lack sufficient strength to get bipartisan legislation passed that will survive a veto threat.

Regardless of your biased opinions Trump did make concessions and now it is up to Congress to work out their differences to come up with a veto-proof bipartisan bill that will keep the government funded from here on.

Why weren't any funding bills put on his desk for over 35 days?

You can argue failure to compromise is bipartisan but you cannot argue that shutting down the government is bipartisan. That Trump use American workers as Leverage was 100% his fault and he took ownership of it he said it on TV over 22 times that he was going to shut down the government if he didn't get his way

Also your argument about "he will sign" is specious given that McConnell had a 100 to 0 CR bill and even though Trump didn't sign it he had enough for a veto override McConnell could have funded the government if he had wanted to, but he is a spineless wimp who won't stand up for the president despite the needs of the American people

The powerless democrats unfairly blame Trump for their own parts in failures to achieve bipartisan Congressional agreements while they refused to budge an inch on their unyielding partisan democrat demands.

Vacuous claims become you.

Mediocrity is your champion.

...and why exactly is his opinion more important than any of ours?
If i want tips on how to fly a glider or an airliner, I will ask him.
Otherwise, he is just another famous name giving an unqualified opinion.

What does Leonard Nimoy's third cousin say about the shutdown?

Problems with politicians coming together to reach a bipartisan compromise?

Problems with Trump to fund the government. But he wanted to shut it down.

I hope each of those 800,000 government workers and the layed-off contractors vote against the SOB in 2020.

There's no rule that the wealthy should have delay-free access in and out of NYC when the government is shut down, either. Now we know how to end shutdowns.

Just to point out it isnt just tower controllers that werent paid, the center controlers (the ones who control the airspace between airports) as well. Shutting down ATC doenst just affect passangers it also affects all air freight the suspsnsion of which will have an immediate and negative impact upon the economy

Hello: It is not Trump's job to work out differences in Congress so Congress can fund the government. It is not Trump's job to forfeit his veto responsibilities in favor of stubborn unyielding minority democrat demands.

Obama shut down the Veteran's memorial in DC. That saved no money but it did send a message to Obama's political enemies.

Excuse me, yes there is a rule, it's called The Constitution of the United States of America.
Democracy consists of representatives elected BY the PEOPLE who do as the people wish.
That IS "representative democracy" as practiced around the world for a couple of centuries.

So YES, if the Democrats have enough juice to convince sufficient numbers on both sides to achieve a passing vote on a bill, then Democrats AND enough Republicans achieve something that any civics lesson should have taught you, and the result is, that bill goes to the Oval Office. If not signed within ten days, it becomes law anyway unless Congress goes out of session before those ten days are up. (known as the "pocket veto")
If the President REFUSES to sign it, he may VETO it and then it goes BACK to Congress and Congress (both parties) can try to OVERRIDE his veto.
That is how government works on Capitol Hill and the rule you're referring to is The Constitution.

How DID you actually THINK it is supposed to work instead? I'd love to hear your alternate explanation, probably something to do with Trump having a hissy fit and Congress cowering in their seats because "the Anointed King is ANGRY".

Ah, a #butObama deflection.

Trump surely knew how to shut down Pelosi's world-traveling partying sprees while he waited for Congress to work out its bipartisan differences to get the government opened back up again.

That's an interesting way to view what happened.

What does Leonard Nimoy's third cousin say about the shutdown?

First of all, he wasn't opining generally about Trump's shutdown, he was talking about ATC. A subject he has more knowledge of than your average celebrity. But I've had the same thought about both parties use of celebrities who have no basis to make a expert opinion. I'm sure more country singing stars support Numnuts, but so what?

It's too bad you weren't able to stick to your belief when it came to Trump. Trump's uninformed opinions on politics and world affairs are as unqualified as any other celebrity's...
