This is something I actually saw in person, being out on the Eisenhower when it happened. Mr. Carroll lays it out in detail, but long story short: no one noticed during preflight that the latches on the radome(the nose of the aircraft that houses the radar antenna) where not latched. During flight, the radome opened, ripped off its hinges and blew back threw the canopy, injuring the pilot. I was up on deck when this odd looking aircraft flew by, that we realized was a 14 without the radome(odd how different it makes it look) just as the call came to clear the deck. Pilot, despite being injured, made an awesome landing on the carrier. Video has in depth explanation of all this, and the video of the landing.
