~ As they get older, they seem to prefer younger.
Anyone ever been in one? And how large of a gap does it have to be considered a substantial age gap?

~ I'm 47 now and I don't feel like I could ask a woman under 40 on a date, as aging really starts to escalate in early to mid 40's ~
A large age gap 20 - 25 years is fine when it is in middle years meaning someone is 30 and someone is 55.
It won't last though because the upper end is rapidly approaching old age and the younger one has a life to live and is not "winding down".
As someone else has said ten years tops, and the older individual must be mentally, and physically fit.
A fling is fine...a relationship - no.
The beauty of youth certainly is fleeting. The wife and I met 15 years ago when she was 29 and I was 39. Looking at pictures from those days makes me cry today. My hair!---what happened to my beautiful head of jet-black hair? When I was 16 I dated a woman in her early 20's. When I was 24 I dated a 33 year old, and when I was 25 I dated a 38 year old. I also dated a 24 year old when I was 33. The age really didn't matter, we were compatible at the time and no one got hurt. I'm 47 now and I don't feel like I could ask a woman under 40 on a date, as aging really starts to escalate in early to mid 40's. So, it's circumstantial...if two people can benefit though, why not?
From this point of view, the female should always be older (if opposite sex), since men tend to not live as long. Yet this is rarely the case
hm an interesting observation but it does make sense yes
Not really because men, in general, are terrible caregivers and suck at living alone. Women, OTOH, are excellent at both...again, in general.

That is a huge generalization.
Men can do everything better than women can, cleaning wise, but they don't want to.
I have had to teach more than one woman how to wash dishes the correct way, to get them clean.
I'm sure that went over well.
Why do you think that would have been a problem?
