After a shooting suspect’s ‘reign of terror,’ a California sheriff blames the state’s sanctuary law

Who do we have to thank for this? The democrats in the California legislature that support the sanctuary laws and policies which protect criminals like this from being turned over to ICE and being deported as federal law requires. Let's not forget about the democrats in DC and all their supporters on the left around the country, who not only support sanctuary cities and sanctuary states, but oppose building a wall to secure our southern border, and endorse an open border policy for America.

The first shots rang out just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, on a road lined with orange trees in Exeter, Calif. A farmworker standing on a ladder heard a car slam on its brakes, then felt himself falling in a hail of bullets. As he hit the ground, he realized that he had been shot in the chest.


The random drive-by shooting at the orchard marked the beginning of what local officials would later describe as one man’s “reign of terror” in agricultural Tulare County. Within 24 hours, Gustavo Garcia would kill one, injure at least six others, rob thousands of dollars from a convenience store and lead a wrong-way chase down a busy highway in a stolen truck, according to police, who believe he may also have been responsible for a second homicide that is still under investigation.


Now, the area’s top law enforcement official is placing the blame on California’s controversial “sanctuary state” law, known as Senate Bill 54, or the California Values Act. Garcia had previously been deported and was arrested just days before his violent rampage, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux told reporters Wednesday. But because of the law, he said, his officers were unable to coordinate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The idea that those who violate US immigration law are simply like Jews practicing their religion or that assisting in deporting them (in this case, again) is akin to killing them or placing them in slave labor camps is insane.

A state is seen as protecting the public by refusing to grant drivers licenses to those who have had their driving privilege revoked or suspended in another state, or routinely turning over fugitives wanted for committing a crimes in other states, but that if that state cooperates with federal authorities on violations of immigration law then it is participating in evil is ridiculous.

Failing to prevent someone else from spilling blood doesn't mean the blood is on your hands. Spilling someone else's blood only to later find out that person was innocent, does. Isn't it better to err on the side of caution and avoid passing draconian laws that carry the risk of harming the innocent, even if those laws might have prevented someone from spilling blood?

I have family from Tulare county. It's turned into a complete ****hole in the past 25 years, due to gangs, drugs, and high unemployment rates. None of these things existed to any great extent before the demographic change brought on by immigration. Visalia was once awarded the 'All American City' award, which was based on liveability, family friendliness, and employment. Today the city is a poster child for unliveabilty, a place where you don't want to raise kids, and high unemployment.

Well clearly deporting the guy TWICE didn't work, did it?
He just showed back up again, like a bad penny.
For the record, California should tweak its policies in order to allow more leverage in cases involving convicted criminals.
I'm not anxious and eager for us to turn the state into a conduit for Trump's ICE policies but if a criminal has been deported twice and he's arrested a third time, law enforcement should not be under any obligation to let them go for any reason whatsoever, and ICE should be notified, because he is clearly a return customer. That alone should set precedence.

We can, even under a Democratic supermajority, make appeals to common sense on this issue and I think that Democratic lawmakers can be pressured to take news stories like this into account.

It sounds like a law that might have had good intentions but seriously clumsy execution and application.

Manufacturing jobs in California are predominantly filled by Latinos in my experience. Some legal, some not. Believe it or not, many Fortune 500 companies with manufacturing facilities in California hire illegals.

Here's where you once again start veering into conjecture.
First off, many of the companies engaging in light manufacturing in Tulare County aren't automaticlly Fortune 500's but whether they are or not, we already have laws on the books about corporate hire of illegals. Just enforce them.
California is not engaged in enabling hire of illegals, or preventing companies from adhering to existing laws on that matter.

I think it is mighty convenient to observe a crowd of Latinos and Latino looking manufacturing employees and just assume on a whim that most of them are illegals.
Tulare County is 40% hispanic, 38% of them are Mexican.
