KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — When U.S. forces and their Afghan allies rode into Kabul in November 2001 they were greeted as liberators. But after 17 years of war, the Taliban have retaken half the country, security is worse than it’s ever been, and many Afghans place the blame squarely on the Americans.

The United States has lost more than 2,400 soldiers in its longest war, and has spent more than $900 billion on everything from military operations to the construction of roads, bridges and power plants. Three U.S. presidents have pledged to bring peace to Afghanistan, either by adding or withdrawing troops, by engaging the Taliban or shunning them. Last year, the U.S. dropped the “mother of all bombs” on a cave complex.

If you don't learn from history, you're condemned to repeat it. Alexander the Great, the Brits & the Russians all tried to conquer Afghanistan & all failed miserably. So what are our objectives there after 17 years & 2,400 deaths?

It seems to me that this war is just an aid package for the Military Industrial Complex than Eisenhower warned us about.

So we were supposed to ignore the Taliban deciding to fly planes into buildings and killing 3000 citizens? Please, explain to me the other option.

No problem.

We can leave. The Taliban can take over. When the Taliban attacks the US again...and you know they will...we nuke them.

Problem solved.

An unending war with no victory in sight is an option?

The Taliban didn't orchestrate 9/11. That was the work of Al Qaida.

We screwed up in Afghanistan and we keep making the same mistakes. Time to go.

Pull troops out, set refugee quota to zero, wish them all the best.

Al Qaida is no longer active. ISIS is trying to get a foothold in Afghanistan. It’s most important neighbor Pakistan is fast becoming a Wahabi Islamic country. International community can do whatever it wants, the people themselves want to follow the right wing
Islam. Better to leave Afghanistan to Taliban. As such practically all the Muslim countries are a threat to the West.
