The right-wing populist German party AFD provokes the public with ethnic nationalism now:

Last week, AFD vice-chairman Alexander Gauland, caused some uproar when he said -- two weeks before the football/soccer Euro Cup -- about black German soccer player Jerome Boateng:

"The people like him as soccer player, but they don't want a Boateng as neigbor". Boateng is the son of a white German mother and an African father, of Christian faith and a 100% naturalized German. When pointed to that fact, Gauland hummed and hawed: "I don't know that much about soccer, and I've learned now Boateng is a bad example, but I just pointed out what many people feel".

Now, Gauland added more fuel to the fire: "The German national soccer team has not been German for quite a while, in the classic sense".

He said, "the soccer team is no longer a matter of national identification, but of money". He denied Germany is a country of immigration, and said "most people don't feel so multi-culti, there is still a strong bond to land and people, history and tradition". "This multicultural world is still strange to most people".

He then attacked German national soccer player Mesut Özil, who has Turkish roots, for his pilgramage to Mecca: "It may be okay for a soccer player, but a state employee, teacher or politician who travels to Mecca should better think again whether the German democracy is the right place for him".

Comments in newspapers suggest that these statements, as well as the ****storm that emerged, and the calls for solidarity with the soccer players against the AFD, were very well calculated stunts from the side of the AFD, to get more publicity -- better bad publicity than none.

The AFD is currently polled at between 13% and 15% of the votes on national level, in Germany.

IMO, it's one thing to be more critical of Islam, but quite another to pander to ethnic chauvinism and racism, as Gauland does here. A perfectly naturalized German soccer player, who even has German blood via his mother, gets attacked now, just because he isn't white? When there is another definition of "blatant racism", I don't know what it is.

The anti-Islam people should think twice before they cheer for or even ally with racist, ethnic-chauvinistic scum -- because when that's what you have to do to be heard with your concerns about Islam, you no longer are part of the solution, you are part of the problem. IMO.

You are quite right. Developments are as bad as had been predicted.
I remember that a high level US diplomat on leaving Berlin wrote then Chancellor of the FRG Dr Kohl that his speeches and policies stoked the attitudes in the population and type of party the AfD is turning out to be.
100 years of xenophobic policies cannot be undone by a few months of unbalanced media chatter and some late come Sunday oratory.

It's no different from previous comments on using firearms to stop refugees entering.

The comment is made and then (phase 2) explained (mouse slipped=Storch, taken out of context=Petry, don't even know anything about football nor that Boateng is actually German=Gauleiter) to be finally spun (phase 3) into something else (all three=lying press distorted it all).

Main thing is that the comment is out there and that's the initial goal (phase 1) achieved.

Looks like Churchill and I got things wrong (that's about the only similarity:mrgreen:). He claimed that every people has about 20 pct of idiots and we have to live with that, I always held the percentage to be much higher and the AfD is currently polled at 15 pct.

So far.

PS: There is the other side of the incidents provoked by AfD. Take the Petry statement that in extremis weapons might be required against refugees at the boarders. This is not only true, it has since ocurred in Europe. But the media and traditional politicians reared in righteous hypocritical wrath. Or the criticism of the Euro with which they began? Dr Lucke was totally right, but the traditional politicians acted as though the the obvious were untrue and raged. The traditional politicians have relied on populist oratory of half and un-truths as they have for decades. As the population has paid the price, they no longer trust the eurocrat politicians. This leads to a strengthening of the parties throughout the continent that are speaking obvious truths in these matters.

So far, I've tried hard to still give the AFD the benefit of the doubt ... but now the point is reached where it gets ugly.

Especially this coming from Gauland, who used to be a conservative CDU member and journalist a decade ago, extremely conservative, but not shrill and somewhat sober -- no benefit of the doubt anymore for him, that was deliberate and well calculated.

On the plus side: The same article linked above quoted a poll by Emnid Institute, according to which 82% of the Germans say "yes" when asked whether they want "someone like Boateng" as neigbor. Among AFD supporters, this number is even higher: 87% of AFD supporters would like someone like Boateng as neigbor.

Looks like the AFD is mainly aiming at publicity -- and the remaining 13%-18%.

BS, for the Germany that she claimed to speak for, it's nothing of the sort. In fact she (Petry) even admitted her "mistake:roll:" not too long afterwards, once she was hit over the had with her stupidity or dishonesty or both.
it has since ocurred in Europe.
Which EU state has opened gunfire upon refugees? By the way, boarders are those who dwell somewhere or get onto things like boats, planes, buses etc.
Or the criticism of the Euro with which they began? Dr Lucke was totally right, but the traditional politicians acted as though the the obvious were untrue and raged.
Lucke is out if you remember, as is the whole following that wouldn't put up with the AfD becoming what it is now.

This bunch of racist bigots is by now no longer running on any currency issue or Euro-skepticism, it's long since gone Nazi.

Weren't there signs at the last Germany match saying people wanted Boateng to be their neighbour?

Randomly interviewing pedestrians being a chief source of merriment over ignorance often displayed by the same, a German TV-satire term went on the loose with photographs of both Boateng and Gauleiter (actually Gauland but he's earned the more appropriate monicker by now) asking passers-by in pedestrian zones which one they'd prefer as a neighbour.

Whereas most males (clearly the greater bunch of soccer aficionados) recognized Boateng, most of the gals didn't. More pertinently though, virtually none of either group recognized Gauleiter.

Nevertheless, long before the TV-team deigned to lift the veil of ignorance, all showed as favouring Boateng with the gals stating that he looked nicer. Nobody mentioned colour or nationality.

For the UK fans, Jerome Boateng is actually half brother (different mother) to Kevin "Prince" Boateng of late "Spurs" and Portsmouth fame. Prince is with Milano today. Born as German as his brother he's meanwhile opted for his Ghanaian roots and gained a passport from there. He played for Ghana in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup but got himself suspended from their team for disciplinary reasons in the latter.

who? How?

Who. Douglas Jones
How. Large policy mix (see debate since 1970s under "deutschland ist kein einwanderungsland")
Examples: The best known was the Holocaust.

The right-wing populist German party AFD provokes the public with ethnic nationalism now:

It seems to be the standard course for the far right these days.. and it does not even have to be related to race.

Take Denmark. At the Olympics the Danish flag will be held during the opening ceremony by Caroline Wozniacki, pro tennis player. Her parents are of Polish origin but naturalized Danish citizens. She was born in Denmark. Poles are not exactly welcome by many in Denmark these days, and the Danish equivalent of the AfD, the Danish Peoples Party.. well they have had members come out saying that no foreigner should hold the Danish flag at the Olympics..

Who. Douglas Jones
WTH? The guy that the US embassy felt compelled to apologize over for spouting what he did. You feel the need to cite him?

With your syntax in the corresponding sentence of your #2 being as garbled as it is, it's incidentally impossible to see whether you wanted to say that Jones wrote to Kohl or of Kohl. To clarify that for others, he didn't write a darn thing, he spoke.
How. Large policy mix (see debate since 1970s under "deutschland ist kein Einwanderungsland")
One of your usual platitudinal hints with no further effort of explanation that one slowly gets tired of.
Examples: The best known was the Holocaust.
Something that (was) ended 70 years ago and started barely 12 years earlier is to you an example of 100 years of xenophobic policy, presumably the preceding 18 years (if my maths are right) having led up to it and the last 70 something aving sprung from it.

Awfercrisskake, I can't be bothered with any of this from you anymore. So there's no need to respond to this.

Bye

So you DO get TV out there in Spain? Or is it that you can't get much BBC that you watch a lot of German TV?

Anyhow, interesting anecdote, thanks.

The latter. BBC etc. to some extent via the net but with no ADSL landline feasible here in the "campo", buffering is annoying. Satellite adequately foot-printing the area down here holds mostly German programmes, some French and some Italian.
Anyhow, interesting anecdote, thanks.
Pleasure.

you change your ideas about muslims many times.

Last another racist idiot from Germany had complained about a children's chocolate manufacturer. Normally it has blue eyed blond haired kids on there (boys and girls). That is until last week when pictures of foreign kids had been appearing on the kids chocolate bars, Arab looking kids, Turkish looking kids and even a black kid.

The PEGIDA group, who hate Muslims, a local chapter had fulminated on the internet about how the Italian manufacturers dared to put foreign kids on their beloved German chocolates. How dare they, they should be boycotted and they were poisoning the German children's mind by putting foreign looking kids on their packaging.

Sadly the idiot group had not realized that the manufacturers of this beloved German chocolate brand had started a European Cup campaign for the 2016 soccer championships in which Germany is going to play. So they asked for nice youth pictures from the German national soccer squad to put on their chocolates. And you guessed it, one soccer player (Boateng) had a German mother (white) and an African father (black) and another was born in Germany but from Turkish parents. The Pegida idiots had been hate mongering against Ferrero for their hateful act (to poison the German kids and parents to think it was normal to be Muslim/black) of putting the players of the German National Soccer Squad on their chocolates.

It should surprise no-one that this Pegida group became the laughing stock of Germany.

1) I realize your argument has been made many times by the populist outcry. But you do realize that it is sometimes wise the back off, when you have not only made your point and most intelligent people realize it.that is, what Petry did. Anyone that has looked up the relevant law, knows she only formulated, what it contains.

2) Besides a number of cases of less lethal weapons like gas and clubs being used in a number of situations in many eu countries against groups of refugees domestically, guns have been used at European boarders a number of times. The most relevant to your question was on the boarder between Hungary and Slowakia as described in the liberal news platform of Die ZEIT on 10 May. The article wonders which dishonesty is at work that this incident is not widely reported after the publicity of Petry kerfuffle.

3) Oh. I know that the AfD has worked out badly and that they have tapped the xenophobia in the population. This is not to say that the party no longer prescribes a more rational approach to the EU. But the brains that produced the understanding that allowed the party to formulate that policy have since left. It turned out that populism is more effective in working the electorate.

But this does not mean whipping up populist hysteria against Petry was a good move or anything else than the destructive. Why act like that, when it almost immediately must expose the media/political establishment as the dishonest bunch the idea of which fires the rage that the AfD profits from?

BS again. Not only did Petry not back off at the time but von Storch expanded upon the theme additionally. Where there certainly are laws that regulate the use of arms for protection against dangerous invaders, use of firearms against unarmed civilians is not covered by any single one of them. And Petry did not "back off", she was forced to correct an untenable interpretation of hers. Petry did not merely formulate what the law contains, she misrepresented it thru either own stupidity or intentional prevarication, serving to get this crap out there.

Where I share the article's amazement (mildly put), let's just get back to how YOU started this. By this claim:
PS: There is the other side of the incidents provoked by AfD. Take the Petry statement that in extremis weapons might be required against refugees at the boarders. This is not only true, it has since ocurred in Europe.
Petry expressly stated that "a border guard must make use of armed force to stop illegal passing of the border by refugees, that's what the law says". A blatant lie.

You been to the same school of lying demagoguery as Petry and von Storch?

The incident where Croatian border guards opened fire is reported to have involved a car that wouldn't stop when challenged. I can't verify the narrative, yet if that really happened I'd think that determining the nature (and danger) of passengers and driver makes advance assessment of the potential of such incidents more difficult. It still doesn't support what you're trying to sell here, though. .

3) Oh. I know that the AfD has worked out badly and that they have tapped the xenophobia in the population. This is not to say that the party no longer prescribes a more rational approach to the EU. It sounds very much as if your compass of values (not to mention of ascertainment of pertinence) is in dire need of re-calibration. Turning the subsequent reporting of the incident into "populism" when that very method is the AfD's most declared province, makes your line of argument, enhanced by this silliness
But this does not mean whipping up populist hysteria against Petry was a good move or anything else than the destructive. Why act like that, when it almost immediately must expose the media/political establishment as the dishonest bunch the idea of which fires the rage that the AfD profits from?

as dishonest as is AfD's conduct.

Actually it gives it the same quality and hence my previous question of who you went to school with.

Where one can never absolve media from holding a certain element of partisan reporting, subsequently accusing them of dishonesty when they report upon the established dishonesty of the likes of Petry, von Storch and Gauleiter is as dishonest as those three have been revealed as being.

And, in the modus of argument that you're apparently hell-bent on pursuing, makes you just as dishonest.
