The D-Day Invasion in Normandy France was one of the biggest military "secrets" of all time. Misdirection. Fake armies. Patton as decoy. etc. etc. etc.

When I hear tactics reported by the media, I think "What are they doing reporting what are boys are gonna do?"

then I think "Why the hell are the generals briefing the media on what are boys are gonna do in the first place?"

When I heard this morning that many of the "insurgents" simply left Baghdad once they found out what are tactics for securing the city were and now our plan is not as effective as it could have been...this was stated by the Sunni Iraqi V.P., then I think "Waht the heck is going on?"

Many people do not trust our governement, but at what cost to the Mission, unless you think that the Mission is bunk and we should Cut and Run, I would think that you would want us to be successful.

QUESTION: Do you think that there should be more secrecy/less advertising of US Military Tactics in Iraq?

It's a difficult question to answer. Part of me wants to say yes because it's stupid to tell the enemy what we're going to do and, in effect, give them ample time to adapt. The other part of me wants to say no because, in light of the events surrounding and immediatley after the Haditha Massacre, we can't trust the military or government to keep our soldiers from committing attrocities, investigate such events, or even to punish the soliders which do commit attrocities, without very public oversight.

Military tactics should be left to the military - we don't need to know about them.
However administrative strategy as well as deliberations should be made public. More importantly evidence to support a war must be made public.

I agree. The public and media should know the overall goal of the military as presented by the politicians but they should not be briefed on military tactics or operations until AFTER they are conducted. At that point their success or failure should be presented and how they are going to move forward based on the outcome.

It seems that the Military should be left to run the war from a Military standpoint as they see fit as long as it does not interfere with the USA's Political Agenda.

We saw a perfect example of Politician reeling in the Military with Truman and MacArthur in Korea.

We saw a perfect example of things done right at Inchon just prior to all that hoolpa.

Far as I've seen, there hasn't been much advertising of tactics other than broad strategies which should already be obvious to the enemy. Every time I saw Casey, Abazaid, et al. in front of the cameras, they kept quiet about the details.

I think that the military is smart enough not to tell the exact plans out, I think that they are aware that Iraqies would watch so I think that they would trick them more then give away the real plan and let them prepare.

I think the military should only give information about whatever they're doing after it's done. Even though I doubt terrorists tune into CNN just to watch the latest development in the Iraq war. I think Jhonny makes a perfecly valid point. I've collected some WWII era posters and some of them have the equivalent "shut up the enemy is watching" on them. I think the media(both right and left) today gives wayyyyy to much information about where our troops are what their missions are etc etc.

I agree. I think that the Military should brief the Government and we should be told POST-Action.

I think that informingthe public PRIOR-Action is a P.R. move and nothing else.
