A small example of the trouble with illegals and American workers.

The current partial government shutdown is due to Trump’s need to appease his base in order to keep their support.

The year old article centered around a group of illegals (many in the U.S. for years, and paying taxes) working in a bakery for low wages, and tensions with members of the local black community.

Your intent in starting this thread was clear, to frame it as an excuse to attack Dems, not as an honest opening to a discussion of illegal immigration.

Factually, complicit hiring by businesses motivated by greed has been a problem for a long time, under BOTH parties.

May be, just may be, Trump's got the conversation started and we need to keep it going. This ^^^ needs to be addressed and resolved.

An honest statement. Thank you.

No. But an additional penalty for wage discrimination on top of whatever penalty there is for hiring undocumented workers diminishes incentive to hire them in the first place.

Since the whole point of hiring illegal immigrants is to violate the FLSA, I really don’t think it’s a disincentive.

The current shutdown is no more Trump's fault than it is Democratic leadership trying to appease their base by not budging on an absurdly small amount of money to protect our border. And no matter how old this article is, it's still pertinent to the discussion today.

I do agree with you that many in the GOP have done everything they can to undercut border security for the very reasons you point out. We are in no way without blame.

Exactly! This creates momentum sort of in the same vein Democrats pushed for gay rights(which I agree with) and are attempting to gain momentum on gun legislation thru incremental steps.

Once the ball starts rolling, the narrative changes which is perhaps why some are so hellbent on fighting this.

What if the penalty for theft was that you had to give the property back?

Dems definitely have their share of blame in the current disfunction however, the current Congress and Senate agreed to a compromise to keep the government running and federal employees paid while an agreement could be negotiated, and as we all know, Trump (who previously had signaled through his COS and others his intention to agree to the plan) said no. That makes him responsible.

And the “absurdly small amount of money” isn’t the point for either side. But you already know that.
