Anarchist outrages, by Rick Coolsaet

Rick Coolsaet is a Belgian historian and university teacher who explains todays terrorism by making analogies with former waves of terror.

In his analysis you'll see the similarities between today's islamist terror and yesterday's anarchist terror.

I like his comparisons, but the actions of the "Black International" also define us clearly the difference between yesterday and today. I also like the psychological mob affect and agree very much. I might go ahead and throw this on my pending reading list.

But he doesn't seem to address the very real change in the nature of terrorism. The "old-school" terrorists Europe outlasted did not seek death. Some were willing to die for their cause, but they much preferred living to watch their enemies fall. No matter how brutal their actions or unrealistic their hopes, their common intent was to change a system of government, either to gain a people's independence or to force their ideology on society.

Now we face terrorists who regard death as a promotion. They reject secular ideology and believe themselves to be instruments of their god's will. They yearn to nudge their god along, to persuade him through their action that the final struggle between faith and infidelity is at hand. While they would like to see certain changes in the world-the destruction of Israel, of the United States, of the West, of unbelivers, heretics, and Muslims whose faith is imperfect-their longed-for destination is a paradise beyond the grave. This could not be more clearer than if today's most fundamental Christians began to form into terror organizations demanding the coming of the "end of days" as they commenced to slaughter people of unlike or wavering faith.

This makes the challenge they pose fundamentally different. This new terrorists are vastly more dangerous, more implacable and crueler than thier predecessors. The political terrorists of the past, especially the 70s and 80s used bloodshed in attempts to reach finite (if often unrealistic) goals. Religious terrorists approach mass murder as an end in itself, as the deserved punishment of the wicked, as a purifying act that cleanses the world. They do not place their bombs solely for political leverage but to kill as many human beings as possible.

Today's terrorists are a throwback tradition of the anchient past (and in some cases not so anchient). Remember seeing the terrorist made videos of the executions? They stood over a trembling tied up man, chanted to god, and slit his throat. We may as well have been watching a ceremony where the priests offerred a calf to god as an offerring.

Today's terrorists are not content with an earthly agenda. They practice human sacrifice.

Great! I'm glad you liked!

Yes of course the comparison may not be "total", there are differences.

First, the communication network. With internet and television, they can spread their message worldwide easily. No one can stop it.

Then, the extremists have a much bigger "reserve" of people. Muslims today can be totally brainwashed and be educated in the hate of the West, thanks to their propaganda media.

I don't think Islamists are more numerous than former terrorists. But their attacks are much more mediatized, once more because of internet and TV.

That can explain why they want to make more and more spectacular acts. WTC, executions...that would have been useless yesterday, but with today's medias, it works very well. Proof: how many posts on this forum talk about "terrorism"?

Today's terrorists are not content with an earthly agenda. They practice human sacrifice.

I can't say if this sentence is right or wrong, but yes, this is really disgusting.

Finally a GySgt post I can agree with!
