Conflict started a petulant thread trying to do just what the thread tittle says. But in typical Conflict style he screwed it up and it got sent straight to The Basement. So I, teacher, The Basement Warden, of the colossal brain, decided to start this thread to...

1. Show the unwashed masses that this is a fair site. That all is open for debate, that Gunny is not abusing his mod status to push his thoughts on us without a place for rebuttal.

2. Show Conflict how it's done.

3. Throw my weight around.

Here's what prompted this...

Ummm. Shouldnt this also be in the basement?

As for Gunny, he and I dont get along, but I think he was a good choice for mod. I dont see that he is abusing his status.

I personally don't believe being a moderator should be deemed a license to start your own locked pinned-up threads where you can post your own info and no one can comment on it. That defeats the purpose of debate.

But like they say about pornography, if you don't like it don't look at it. I just ignore that thread.

I agree, I'll just paste one of the reponses from the basement thread.....

This is just like having a sticky like "The White House" It's an emotional mistake, some look at it and say, but it's our troops, but we can't let emotions blind us here. It sends the wrong message, and I just hope it is opened up for all to applaud, praise, or criticize.

Actually I think Gunny's thread only works because it is locked. I look at it as a view from somone in the forces, posting what he hears, stuff I might not otherwise see, its more of a service than a debate. I don't feel he is pursuing an agenda or trying to manipulate me, just offering information to think about, I make my own opinions. If it were open it'd get clogged with other posts, and not the information presently available. You read it and make your own opinions, post them elsewhere, in a thread like this funnily enough:doh

Well I really think one of the prolife mods....are there any?....should have a locked thread that shows pictures of aborted dismembered dead babies.

You know the media talks about abortion occasionally but the graphics are never shown. And definitely this thread should be locked that way the pictorial isn't clogged up with wacky prochoicers claiming the pics are fake or manipulated. And of course we don't wan't all those pesky comments about how most of the pics are late term dismembered babies while most abortions happen early on.

I think it would be highly informative and anyone who takes offense can either not look or suck on an egg. :rofl :bootyshake :beatdeadhorse

Same thing, Right?

If what he is posting can not be challenged, in the thread, then it's not debate, but indoctrination. To suggest that folks have to copy and paste everything they may disagree with, is foolish, time consuming, and very unnecessary. I also don't like the commentary, like this one for instance.....

"The Flyboys Get Tough

With more people in harm's way, the coddled Air Force starts stripping M-16s and pumping up basic training"

This is a Marine taking shots at the other branches, my son serves in the Air Force, and I don't appreciate this kind of derogatory statement. Can I denounce this in the thread, no, I am expected to copy and paste it, all so his little thread, how did the other gentleman put, that's right, does not "clog his thread"

Wow, I see it now, I just think it ridiculous, I mean, I copied the mission statement of the forum for God's sake, but whatever, you got me on a technicality.:rofl

Myself, I think the reason and only reason Gunny started that thread was to give the "positive news" a chance to be read. Nobody else seems willing to post it.

Many people complain that all we hear is the bad stuff. Gunny is just trying to offer a counter-balance oppertunity to read the positives that many people have desired to read. No more, no less.

I am kinda surprised to see some of you get upset with that. I find that to be rather nit-picky.

IMHO, if this upsets you, you have WAY too much time on your hands. :doh Get over it for crissakes.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Conflict was banned because of that thread? I am assuming he had caused other problems, right?

So if there is no "good news" we'll just force it down your throat. You sound very hypocritical sir, especially with your usual stance on the war and all.

I see what you're talking about, but let's acknowledge that this message board is about debate and people being able to provide their own point of view. As talloulou pointed out, the other stickies on this site relate to rules--not opinions. It's basically one person's opinion and his saying essentially, "Talk to the hand." Personally, I don't read that thread at all. No thank you. But why are we allowing people to express their opinion, while at the same time, prevent others to comment on that opinion? To me, that goes against the purpose of any political message board. But that's me.

I listen to you, I think you need to get back to being the angry liberal, that looked good on you. This, "let's be happy" crap, that's not what I like about you, not at all.;)

Is it so hard to have a thread thats not clogged up by garbage, that provides us with early bird news that we probably won't see on TV. I agree full heartedly on GySgts locked thread. How can you argue or debate facts?

It is a routine occurrence to be bombarded by “gloom and doom” stories regarding the military. This is unfair and doesn’t come close to what occurs globally. Frequently, I get Private Messages from fellow members asking military questions, so I gather that there is a sort of interest. This thread has a sole purpose. It is to display the articles and such that do not make the headlines. Because of what I’m surrounded with and given what I am, this will be focused around the Marine Corps - the information is readily available. The general absence of articles regarding other branches is in no way a disrespect to the sister services and I will post stories on these services as well.

Does anyone know what a disclaimer is? Its usually used as to tell people not to get offended... What is so wrong about shedding some light on the military? If no one had pm'ed GySgt for any information, why would he still put up a thread? He did this because people are interested. If you don't want to read a thread, skip it. Simple concept isn't it?

It is a closed thread, so that I can keep it neat and clean.
Meaning, no one can throw it off topic, with garbage and such.
I will not post commentaries or opinionated pieces.
Meaning its all fact, nothing to debate.
It will contain news articles from the “Early Bird” (News gathering source for the Military to keep aware of situations around the globe) and unclassified intel reports.
Meaning this is pretty special. Allowing you to see what most civilians will never see.
Keep in mind, that I will not always be able to provide links. because the "Early Bird" takes actual articles from military and civilian battle field reporters and from newspaper articles from international nations.
There ya go. Not opinions.
My goal is not to bore you with my personal views, so there will be none.
Hence the closed thread.
Just because this particular thread will remain closed, it does not mean that members can't take from here and make their own threads for debate.
There!!! If you think its a waist of time doing this, then your lazy, and instead would rather sit and whine about things. How much time can you really and truely consume copying abd pasting?!?! Come on, you did this all through out Middle and High school, unless your too old for that. "Momma, sister wont let me play with her toys"
Please feel free to do so in what ever manner you see fit.
Another offer.

What is so wrong about a closed thread that provides us with some great information?! Why kill the messenger? Your first look inside something, and you try to destroy its essence. So sad...

Members,

The thread in question was of noble intentions and had nothing to do with anything partisan, anything personal, and anything negative. It was merely a thread for the many that frequently PM'd me asking about happenings in the Military who were fed up with the very few members who find comfort in negative spins by posting the filtered headlines. Seeing this as a possible issue for the few individuals, I purposefully stated that members should pull from and debate if they wish.

Despite the majority favorable vote of the Moderators and the majority wishes and requests of the members that enjoy the thread in question, of which some are publicly supporting, I will allow the personal held over grudges of two individuals who seem to be determined to complain about it to the disruption of the site, have their way.

I will end this. The thread in question will be deleted. Further more, this thread will no longer have any value and therefore will be closed.
