Donald Trump was a tool in a long-running Russian campaign to weaken the United States. That’s been documented in Republican-led investigative reports, and now it has been updated with new evidence, thanks to the U.S. Intelligence Community’s assessment of the 2020 election. The report, drafted by the CIA, the FBI, and several other agencies, was released in unclassified form on Tuesday, but it was presented in classified form on Jan. 7. I don’t think that Trump was ever a “Russian asset” in the true intelligence sense.

He was always a “useful idiot”. Ever since Russian gangsters started buying condos in the Trump Tower back in the 1980’s.

By the mid 1990’s, the Russians had him on the hook. They kept him afloat by laundering money through his casinos.

They were there when Felix Sater (the guy Trump barely knew even though he carried a Trump businesss card), and Trump Soho.

By that time, no US bank would lend on a Trump deal, and he was stuck using the same banks the Russians laundered their money through.

Some have speculated that Trump’s presidential campaign was really just a branding effort to sell Putin on the idea of a Trump Tower Moscow.

I doubt that a Trump Tower Moscow was ever going to happen. But Trump was so fixated on it that he had his flunkies meeting with the Russians throughout the 2016 campaign. It’s hard to figure why anyone would buy a condo in a building in a country that people are normally trying to launder money OUT of. But Trump was never too bright.

Other people in his orbit were obviously Russian assets. Felix Sater. Carter Paige, possibly Mike Flynn, definitely Paul Manafort, Lev and Igor and possibly Steve Bannon. Not to mention Robert Mercer.

I agree with you that Trump was not a Russian “asset”.

He was a useful idiot.

The Russians always had plenty of material to use against Trump. Indeed, they used some of it periodically. And they kept Trump on as short a leash as they possibly could.

Trump had been on their payroll for much fo the twenty years before he got elected. Russians financed or bailed Trump out of every deal he did after the mid 1990’s.

They know where every dime of his money is. They were the banker.

This insider’s view also told them that Trump was a reckless idiot who could not be trusted, or relied upon.

They knew he would leave a trail of destruction, broken promises, pointless casual betrayals, and flagrant corruption in his wake.

But they couldn’t control it completely.

This was made obvious to Moscow even before Trump took office. During the transition, while Trump mainly held court at Trump Tower and did nothing serious about staffing a government, the collection of bag men and wannabe international men of mystery ran around peddling outlandish hairbrained schemes on the strength of their association with Trump. Flynn urged the Russian ambassador to tell Putin not to retaliate against the Obama Administration because Trump was going to make the sanctions go away. But he was so reckless and stupid about it, that he blabbed this on a line that he should have assumed was tapped (and it was).

As a result, the number one item on the Russian/Trump wish list became off limits before Trump was even inaugurated.

Almost immediately after the election, Deustche Bank announced that they were going to unload their Trump portfolio. The Russians are cashing out thier investment.

There are a lot of issues with your narrative.

First, you freely admit the collusion, and then hide behind the fact that collusion is not a chargeable offense.

An “asset” in spy terms does not necessity denote a person who is actively and KNOWINGLY working on behalf of a foreign government, but can be a person that is seen as one who unknowingly assists in the goal of that government. As such, there is simply no doubt that Putin considered Trump to be as asset.
