What About the Ground Zero Church? Archdiocese Says Officials Abandoned Project

FOXNews.com - What About the Ground Zero Church? Archdiocese Says Officials Abandoned Project

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America accused New York officials on Tuesday of turning their backs on the reconstruction of the only church destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, while the controversial mosque near Ground Zero moves forward.

The sidelined project is the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, a tiny, four-story building destroyed in 2001 when one of the World Trade Center towers fell on top of it. Nobody from the church was hurt in the attack, but the congregation has for the past eight years been trying to rebuild its house of worship.

While the mosque project cleared red tape earlier this month, negotiations between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the church stalled last year -- and will not be revived, according to government officials. Though the particulars of the two projects are completely different and on the surface unrelated, the church and its supporters see a disconnect in the way the proposals have been handled.

An archdiocese official said Tuesday that the situation has created "consternation" for those still struggling to jump-start talks over the church.

Nice. real nice.

Nice. real nice.

it appears the church queered the deal by insisting on funding/terms the port authority was unwilling or unable to provide

the port authority has indicated the church can proceed with the rebuilding on its own

possibly, your 'nice. real nice' expression is an acknowledgment of the church's intransigence ... if not, maybe you will elaborate

Looking over the article, this appears to be a dispute primarily over funding, not whether the church has a right to be there, which is the primary issue with the mosque.

Here is an older article that goes into more detail over the breakdown in negotiations between the church and the port authority.

This is an old issue, negotiations between two parties broke down, and the two sides are pointing fingers at each other casting blame, which is what usually happens in situations like this. This is between the Orthodox Church and the Port authority, which one is being more obstinate is fuzzy, but regardless, the port authority is not a player in the park51 deal, so other than being able to claim tangential incendiary appeal, the two issues are completely unrelated.

Hey the anti Islam forces in the US will use any method to discredit and attack Muslims, so why not lie and twist the truth as well!

Yes, look at all those people taking to the streets in protest of building this church!

There have already been threads on this. It has nothing to do with the fact it is a church, but it has to do with talks between the church and Port Authority. The church is allowed to build where it previously was without question.

Exactly.. It's only one side (the one's against the Muslims) protesting other's exercising their constitutional rights. How can somebody complain about this hypothetically happening to a Christian church, and not see the blatant irony and hypocrisy.
