"The Donald" was in Central California earlier this week, thrilling farmers with his plan to build a wall to keep the Hispanic illegals out of the country. In fact, a headline in our local paper read, "We Will Build a Wall" with a photo showing Trump in front of a crowd where some of his supporters are holding a sign captioned "Farmers for Trump".
Obviously, these "Farmers for Trump" have forgotten how heavily they depend on the work done by the thousands of illegal aliens agriculture employs to fatten the bottom line. It's clear to rational people that nationwide, a lot of his supporters don't realize the negative financial impact of Trump's Wall. They are the millions of businessmen who want to maintain the free-flow of cheap labor from Mexico.
Having lived in the San Joaquin Valley for five decades and worked in businesses providing services to growers big and small, it's become apparent during those many years that, from family farms to giant corporate farms, only the small percentage of businessmen who value principles will hire U.S. citizens instead of undocumented workers.
For the unethical employers, management positions are sometimes held by U.S. citizens, but the overwhelming majority of tractor drivers, irrigators, fruit pickers, fruit and berry packers, and general laborers are "wetbacks" and are paid substandard wages (and yes, “wetbacks” is the term used to describe them, and has been for many, many years.)
Most Americans ignore, deny, or would rather remain unaware that illegal workers do not dare complain when government safety standards are ignored by their employers, and that wage theft by the employers of illegal farm workers is common. This makes hiring them very desirable for ethically challenged employers.
Unfortunately, these conditions are not limited to agriculture, it is true of nearly all businesses where the cheap labor costs of undocumented workers is exploited. Understandably, the word "inmigración" strikes terror in illegal workers, as it means the INS is nearby. Some of these shifty employers report the locations of undocumented employees to the INS so these workers are arrested and deported before they receive their last paycheck.
Paying a U.S. citizen to do this back-breaking and dirty work would cost these farmers dearly. Just as it would the many other Trump supporters who own or manage companies that benefit unfairly from the work done for them by undocumented workers.
For many years, the GOP has ignored the calls to reform immigration laws from their rank-and-file voters . The right wing's hero, Ronald Reagan, supported policies welcoming illegal workers from south-of-the-border before, during, and after his presidency. His support was not due to his love for Hispanics, but was his obligation to Republican political donors who demanded the plentiful cheap labor remain available. The Congressional Republicans have been doing the same thing for a long, long time.
When this tidbit of business reality finally dawns on Trump supporters who employ illegal aliens, The Donald will quickly see their support dry up.

If you agree with me that's fine. If you do not, I don't really care.
