The Salt Lake Tribune is actually one of TWO newspapers in Salt Lake City. The other is far right and owned by the Mormon Church, so the SL Tribune fills the gap on the left side of the spectrum. The trib is actually VERY sane and forward thinking, relatively speaking in comparison to the state of Utah as a whole.

I was simply making an observation. If the piece was attempting to provide a reasonable and realistic observation on gun violence and the fact that no one cares, perhaps we should have the leading perpetrators as well as victims of gun violence in America.

The vast majority of gun deaths are committed by people who legally owned their guns.

Most gun owners are white.

Also, Salt Lake City is actually a relatively sane city, in comparison to the rest of the state. Republicans have not held the mayorship since 1974, and out of 7 city council members, only 2 are gop.

The reason Utah doesn't have a single democrat in DC is because of extreme gerrymandering. The progressive voters of Salt Lake City are divided up among ALL FOUR congressional districts in the state, and ZERO congresspeople come from Salt Lake City, despite it being the biggest city in the state. If there were no Gerrymandering, Utah would probably have one or two of its four representatives be Democrat.

The Trib would be considered right of center in most cities. By Utah's standards it is left, but by sane standards, it is right wing. Not far right, but still right of center.

The firearm homicide rate among black men aged 20-29 is about 89 per 100,000.To put that fact in some international perspective, in Honduras—the country with the highest recorded homicide rate—there were 90.4 intentional murders per 100,000 people in 2012. Yeah, "the liberal Utah paper" is still pretty right in the greater scheme of things.

Regardless, Pat Bagley is loved by the Salt Lake Tribune's readers, and there is no reason the Trib wouldn't publish his work, especially since he's been on their staff since the 90's, I believe.

That makes a little more sense if he's a staff cartoonist. Most papers just publish syndicated work.

I have no interest in people senselessly shooting each other in our inner cities. Not only does it cause a great amount of needless death, it isn't always contained and often kills random people passing by.

If you've got two population pools you're comparing and one pool is 1000 individuals and the other is 10,000 individuals and you want to compare gun death statistics it's rather poor method to go merely off ONLY the number of gun deaths within each unit. If the 1000 unit has 100 gun deaths and the other unit has 200 gun deaths the rate in unit 1 is 10% while the larger group would only have a rate of 2%.

Furthermore, if the gun deaths in the larger group consisted of 150 suicides and 50 homicides while in the smaller group you have 10 suicides and 90 homicides you now have a gun homicide rate of 9% in the smaller group and .5% in the larger group.
